Your Baby Sleeps All Night. Then He Suddenly Keeps Waking Up Again. What Do You Do?Your baby might be going through sleep regression.by Kate Borbon .
Baby sleep is one of the biggest concerns in new parents’ minds. Just when you think your child is finally able to sleep through the night, suddenly, he’s up again and you have no idea why. This is called “sleep regression.”
Ria Lopez, a certified child sleep and behavior specialist, defines sleep regression as “a time when your baby who was sleeping quite well suddenly has difficulty sleeping long stretches or is harder to put to sleep.”
In an email interview with SmartParenting.com.ph, Lopez explains that sleep regression typically occurs when a child achieves developmental milestones, so while it may be seen as a regression for sleep, it is also a sign that your little one is learning important skills.
It’s completely normal for babies to go through sleep regression; in fact, this should be expected, says Lopez. “We want our child to learn new skills and hit their milestones, so although sleep might be difficult for a few nights, we want to celebrate their progress as well.”ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
When to expect sleep regression to occur
Lopez says at these times, babies typically experience the following milestones, which might involve some sleep regression.
3 to 4 months
Your baby is no longer a newborn but an observant and social baby. “This is a great phase but it also means FOMO for them, they would rather be with you or looking around rather than sleeping! This is also when their sleep cycles change due to their development.”
8 to 10 months
At this time, babies usually learn to stand, cruise, or walk. They might even begin to acquire some language skills.
15 to 18 months
Babies learn more skills and might now be ready to have one nap per day.

What changes can you expect during this stage?
Get ready for some difficulties: Lopez says you might have to wake up frequently throughout the night and have a hard time getting your child to nap. Additionally, prepare to drop some naps and adjust your child’s bedtime if necessary.
Lopez also says that it’s not always wise to let babies sleep wherever there is light noise “para masanay sila.” Her advice? “We need to observe what works best for our child and make sure to respect that to ensure that they get enough sleep.”
She continues, “At the four-month mark, they are no [longer] ‘sleep anywhere’ babies but have developed to be little adults with their own preferences for sleep, so make sure to offer a prepared safe sleep environment for them.”

“Stay consistent and ride it out, without creating any sleep habits that you wouldn't want to continue with. Make sure to follow an age-appropriate schedule, so we have the right number of naps at the right time and an early bedtime as well.”
