Struggling to find ways to put your little one to sleep? This dad has just found the answer – tissue paper. And, it’s surprisingly effective.
Sydney father Nathan Dailo filmed his 3-month-old son Seth as he lulled him to sleep in just 40 seconds. The video was uploaded to Youtube and titled “How to put a baby to sleep in less than ONE MINUTE”. It has now over 4.4 million views! “This worked for my baby 5 times already so thanks,” commented one viewer.
So what's the trick? At the start of the video, Seth is awake and lively. Then, Nathan glides the tissue paper gently over his son’s face, and slowly with every glide Seth inches his way into dream land. In about 14 strokes Seth is fast asleep.
Pediatrician Dafna Adhoot, from Tarzana Pediatrics Medican Groups, said that it’s the repetition of the motion that does it. “It’s not the tissue that matters, it’s the motion,” she told Yahoo Parenting. “You’re basically stimulating baby’s ability to self soothe, which calms him down and helps him go to sleep.”
It works the same way as gently rocking a baby or rhythmically running your fingers over his forehead. “A recent study from a doctor in Israel found that 1 stroke massage every 3 seconds is the rhythm that most helps babies fall asleep,” added Adhoot.
However, she doesn't advise the method for older infants. “By four months, when sleep structure changes into a more adult rhythm of sleep, you want to help babies self soothe and not be dependent on methods that you have to provide,” she said.
