The early registration for kindergarten, as well as Grades 1, 7, and 11 students in public schools is ongoing until June 9, 2023, according to the Department of Education (DepEd). All schools are encouraged to conduct enrollment advocacy campaigns within their respective areas, such as public schools in Marikina City which are 33 in total.
Public school system
A public school is, as defined by Dictionary.com, as a school "maintained at public expense for the education of the children of a community or district and that constitutes a part of a system for free public education commonly including primary and secondary schools."
That definition applies to the Philippines and many more countries, like the United States and Australia. But in England, a public school means "any of a number of endowed secondary boarding schools that prepare students chiefly for the universities or for public service," or simply put by the Cambridge Dictionary, "an expensive type of private school."
The public school system in the Philippines became adequately secularized during the first decade of American rule at the turn of the 20th century. It was established upon the recommendation of the Schurman Commission.
Thus U.S. President McKinley instructed the Taft Commission to enforce giving free primary instruction that trained the people for the duties of citizenship and avocation. The task of teaching in public schools using English as the medium of instruction went to the chaplains and non-commissioned officers.
In 1901, a highly centralized public school system was installed by the Philippine Commission by virtue of Act No. 74. To fully implement this Act, as it created a heavy shortage of teachers, the Philippine Commission authorized the Secretary of Public Instruction to bring to the Philippines 600 teachers from the U.S. They were the Thomasites.
