“It All Began with Bananas”: Denise Rayala of Bebeng’s Kitchen Shares Her StoryGet to know the mompreneur behind this up-and-coming homegrown food biz!
Women, particularly mothers, are known to be great multi-taskers. Many of us also seem to have an innate entrepreneurial spirit, probably borne out of the desire to care for and help provide for our families’ needs.
Because of this, and the desire to “chase dreams,” as some people say, many moms take that leap of faith and become mompreneurs, starting their own businesses mostly from scratch – it all starts with a dream.
This is what happened with Bebeng’s Kitchen, too. Denise Redrico Rayala, the mom behind it, started dreaming of owning her successful home-based business just last year, and now, it is slowly becoming a reality.
Denise, who is more known online as “Bebeng” of the blog Bebengisms.com, shares how Bebeng’s Kitchen began in July, 2014.
“Everything started with super ripe green bananas and my then-new small tabletop oven. I started baking and didn't stop developing my banana loaf recipe until I finally got the taste I was aiming for,” she says.
“Once I got it, I had my sister-in-law sell the finished products at her office. I then added chocolate chips to the banana loaves I made, and eventually came up with my own version of banana choco chip muffins.”
Thus, Bebeng’s Kitchen was born. Denise says the business can be considered a “food/grocery” one, providing homemade condiments and pastries.
“Before I was a mompreneur and a stay-at-home mom to my 6-year-old daughter, I worked in a broadcasting network, a call center company, and trained real estate specialists for a living,” she continues.
Denise says having varied work experiences and meeting different kinds of people definitely taught her how to work hard, market products, and deal with people.
“I also blog so having solid support in the blogging community I belong to helped me a lot, too,” she adds.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Homemade classic foodie favorites
“All the products that I sell are our (my husband’s and my) classic favorites. I want my foodies -- which is what I call my customers -- to feel at home whenever they eat my totally homemade goodies,” Denise shares.
She considers her food products to be unique because “I cook the food in my own kitchen at home, so whenever a customer eats what I made, it's like dining in our house, too.”
Denise also takes pride in the fact that she chooses her ingredients based on what she would personally consume.
“That's the main reason why some of my products are a bit pricier than the others in the same category,” she discloses. “I only want the best for my foodies. I don't use additives and extenders. I personally buy the ingredients, too.”
Dream big, chase your dreams
Bebeng’s Kitchen is a home-based enterprise for now but Denise dreams of making it bigger so she can have her own "factory/warehouse and office."
For now though, she is happy to be operating it from home. “I have a lot of time to spend with my daughter while I work. In fact, I bring her along with me when I go shopping for supplies and ingredients,” she shares.
Her daughter also helps with minor kitchen duties such as stirring atsara syrup. “I want her to get involved and be aware that Bebeng’s Kitchen isn't just mine; it's ours,” Denise explains. “As for my husband, he drives for me, carries the heavy stuff and is my 'financial adviser' whenever he can help me out.”CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
To end, we share with you what Denise has to say to her fellow moms who might want to chase their dreams of being businesswomen, too:
“One thing that I've learned as a novice mompreneur is to MAKE IT HAPPEN. Stop procrastinating and do it.
“Some say that they can't start because they don't have enough capital. People with successful businesses are risk-takers. Get a loan if you can, a reasonable amount that you think you can pay within x number of years.
“Success is unreachable for those who make excuses all the time. But don't force yourself into doing what you don't like. My business is my passion, so even if I feel tired and sleepy at the end of the day, I still do it with a happy heart and a focused mind.”
