The dad wanted to make it up to Ellie, since he was based abroad and studying in London during the first few years of her daughter’s life. “By the time I got back here, I made it a point to make up for lost time, na makabawi kay Ellie,” he shares in an online interview with Pep.ph.

Jake adds, “Ginawa ko talaga lahat. I try to spoil her — but not too much. Every time she’s with me, talagang I make sure that we have fun.”

If there was one good thing that came out of the enhanced community quarantine, it was that Jake got to spend 102 full days with his daughter. He is co-parenting with Ellie's mom, his former girlfriend, Andi Eigenmann.

Back in June, Jake shared on his Instagram some photos of the times they spent together. “The silver lining in all this is having spent 102 straight days with her as opposed to the usual sched. The days were long and tough, but she’s been a reminder that the world still is beautiful — and better than Marst,” the dad wrote. (In one of the photos, Ellie spelled the planet Mars as “Marst.”)

Jake says that he and Ellie love traveling together — for the little girl’s past three birthdays, they had been visiting different local destinations like Dumaguete, Roxas, and Siquijor. But this year, it will be a little different. “Medyo mauudlot ngayong birthday niya this coming November,” he says, citing the pandemic.

Jake says that Ellie is always fun to be around. “Whenever I’m with Ellie, enjoy lahat,” the dad says.

Just like any other dad, Jake admits he is also apprehensive about Ellie approaching her teenage years. This November, the little girl will turn 9!

“I’m not looking forward to it,” Jake shares with a laugh. “Siyempre as much as possible, gusto ko baby [pa rin siya].”

Of course, he knows it’s inevitable. So as early as now, he’s preparing not only himself, but also Ellie for this new phase. “Nabasa ko in one of Will Smith’s Instagram posts, he said something like, ‘Parenthood is a balance between letting go and squeezing tight.’”

He adds, “Nandun na si Ellie sa age na she gets curious about lots of things and slowly parang gusto na rin niyang maging independent somehow… so maybe a few more years, she’ll leave the nest. I just have to make sure that before that happens, she’s well-equipped to survive by herself.”

For now, he’s treasuring all the precious time that he gets to spend with his daughter. “Dahan-dahan lang, huwag tayong mag-madali. Enjoy lang,” he says.
