John Lloyd Cruz On Becoming A Dad: 'Akala Mo Ready Ka Because You Wanted It'

Parents everywhere will understand how much a child changes lives. Whether or not it was a planned or unplanned pregnancy, you can only prepare so much to become a parent. And, as actor John Lloyd Cruz came to realize, it takes firsthand experience to realize just how overwhelming it can be to become one.

John Lloyd was the guest in a podcast of newscaster Karen Davila, where they talked about the actor’s comeback, why he left in the first place, and of course, how it’s like to be a father to 3-year old Elias. 

He and ex-partner actress Ellen Adarna are co-parenting Elias as of the moment, and to the best of their ability. You can see in their respective social media posts how each one spends time with Elias. 

In Davila’s podcast, he explained that even when the pregnancy is planned, it doesn’t mean that a parent is completely ready to be a father or a mother. He explains, “Tingin ko isang bagay siya na akala mo ready ka because you wanted it. We like to believe na we are in control. We like that idea na ‘Hindi, it’s my plan. Plinano ko iyan.’” 

John Lloyd learned the hard way how it’s like to have things not go the way they planned. No one definitely goes into a relationship thinking that it would end, or no couple who wanted a child thinks that they would need to part ways and do co-parenting.

The actor shares, “Paano mong naplano 'yung ganung bagay?’ Kasi it’s beyond words. Describing being a father especially nung lumabas siya, there’s no way na merong tao na naplano 'yung ganung ka-weird and ka-radical na bagay."

"That’s a life. Buhay 'yung lumabas because of your responsibility,” he adds.

Speaking of responsibilities, John Lloyd isn’t scared of the responsibilities that come with being a dad. He is happy being a father to Elias. As any parent can relate to, not just because you feel like you’re not fully equipped to be a parent, doesn’t mean that you’re not glad to be one.

He says, “I didn’t get scared [of the responsibilities] at all. I was scared to admit na parang medyo it’s a little bit too much than what I expected. But I think that’s the whole essence of it.”

While parenthood is one of the most challenging changes in anyone’s life, it is also one of the most rewarding. What John Lloyd said about fatherhood explains how every parent feels — unprepared, unqualified, but doing the best you can every single day — and loving it.
