Kristine Hermosa On Being A Mom Of 5: 'I've Accepted Na I Cannot Always Be A Super Mom'
  • With one child, first-time moms already feel we are always aligaga and out of place.

We have so much to think about: what meal can I cook that my child will surely eat, how much screen time will I allow today, or did I spend enough quality time with her?

In a Poprica episode, Smart Parenting Editor-At-Large Rica Peralejo-Bonifacio interviewed a celebrity mom who takes care of not just two or three children, but five children in different ages: Kristine Hermosa-Sotto.

She jokes about being a mom of five, “Alam mo, sa totoo, hindi na rin ako maka-keep up. Hindi ko talaga alam kung anong nangyayari.” She describes their usual day as ‘happy chaos’.

    Greatest fear as a mom

Rica shared that before becoming a mom, she didn't really have a lot of ‘fears’, but that changed when she had kids.

Kristine then said, “One of my fears is that I won’t be good enough for them, and I’ve accepted na I cannot always be a super mom. Tao lang tayo.”

“Pero everytime na na-feel ko, o na-feel namin ni Oyo na, ‘Paano na yung mga bata, siyempre iba-iba sila ng personalities, kung baga, paano natin ito palalakihin isa-isa,” she said. “We always counter it with the Word of God. Kasi wala ka nang magagawa, all you can do is just do your part and bahala na si Lord,” Kristine said.

Kristine and Oyo’s eldest son is a teenager, while the youngest is only almost two years old. “I think having kids will make you think and understand how you are not in control. You can do certain things but not everything is sure,” she said.

“You’re trying out things, you’re doing your best, but actually you have to wait a few more years to see,” she said.

    “Mas magiging selfless ka talaga”

Rica asked Kristine, “How did motherhood change you?” Kristine first shared the obvious changes, like the physical changes, hormones, and of course, frequent forgetfulness.

But one thing she learned after having five kids is being selfless.

“Everytime I think of buying stuff for myself, hindi ko naman dine-deprive ang sarili ko, but whenever I feel na parang gusto kong umalis or ganyan, siyempre we all need that, lahat naman ng parents kelangan yan. Pero tuturuan ka talaga ni God, ano ba talaga ang priority mo at this very moment? Para ba sa sarili mo? Or kaya lang nagiging ganyan kasi nadadala ka sa emotions mo? Siyempre napapagod din tayo. So talagang magiging selfless ka,” she honestly shared.

    Kids' health

If there’s one thing all parents can talk about, it is our child’s health issues. We always worry whether it's a simple cough, colds or tummy issues. And we're always willing to help a fellow parent.

Kristine shared her youngest son’s tummy issues with Rica and said, “Actually si Vin, my fourth child, there was a season na lagi siyang nagrereklamo, ‘My tummy is painful’.”

'Alam mo what works for all of them? Lambing! TLC, lots of TLC' -Kristine Hermosa on caring for kids with different ages

She would be confused about its cause. “Kids are different and also have different nutritional needs.

Kristine shared a secret that works for all their kids no matter their age, “Alam mo what works for all of them? Lambing! TLC, lots of TLC! Kelangan mo ipa-feel sa kanila na I know what you’re feeling, love, love, love.”

Rica jokes, “Sana may X-Ray ako na nakikita kung anong nasa tiyan nila diba?,” sharing that tummy issues are really common among kids.

Rica asked Kristine her advice to parents in catering different personalities, needs, and interests in the house. She said, “If you are grateful where you are, everything will follow.”
