I fell in love with this board book as soon as I saw it on the shelf. I bought it on a whim for my then 18-month old daughter, Zoe, and it instantly became her favorite book. It is a board book so there’s little fear of your little one tearing the pages.
Betsy Snyder’s art is just darling and the singsong nature of reading aloud each haiku to your child is such a wonderful bonding experience. There are six nature-themed haikus and each page has a big tab to encourage children to explore this very charming book on their own. Each haiku is also accompanied by the kanji word (or Chinese characters, one of the three main writing systems of Japanese) of each haiku title. This was an additional bonus for me since most kanji words are almost identical to their mandarin equivalent. I wanted my little girl to be exposed to her Chinese roots early on.
It came as a complete surprise to me when months later Zoe recited some lines from her Haiku Baby book (even though she hadn’t touched it for weeks, maybe a month!). We were reading another bath-time book of hers and she recited out loud, “splish-splash, puddle bath!” when she saw a picture of a little boy in the bathtub. I had to think hard about where she got that line and realized it was from her Haiku Baby book. It was wonderful to think that my 2 year-old daughter was reciting a line from a haiku!
You can get a sneak peak of this wonderful gem at http://www.haikubaby.com/. Haiku Baby is available at Fully Booked, Fort Bonifacio branch as of February 6, 2010. It is very reasonably priced at Php 294.00.
