Mason was born with Sotos Syndrome, which is a genetic disorder that affects growth and development. The family thought Mason's speech delay was because of the disorder. “He wasn’t able to enunciate a word, so instead of saying, ‘Daddy,” or, ‘Dad,’ he would say, ‘da.,'" said Mason’s dad, Dalan Motz. Mason has been in speech therapy since he was a year old.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Everything changed when they visited Dr. Luedemann-Lazar’s office. As it turns out, he was tongue-tied. It's a condition formed in the womb, when the tongue doesn't separate completely from the bottom of the mouth. According to Dr. Luedemann-Lazar, tongue-tie can affect the development of the face, nose, and airways—all of which were experienced by Mason. Since birth, he has suffered from breathing and sleeping issues and when he ate, there were choking challenges.
Luedemann-Lazar performed a procedure to relieve Mason’s tongue tie in April 2017 and his mother says he almost immediately started talking. Even ailments he had previously suffered from have improved tremendously.
