There are many single moms we love who, despite their demanding careers, particularly in show business, are also successful at raising their children. Here are seven more single mom celebrities playing the best role of their lives.
Jaclyn Jose (real name: Mary Jane Guck) made headlines in late August 2022 when she posted on Instagram that she was retiring from show business. But the multiawarded actress later clarified in an interview with PEP.ph that she was "sobrang depressed na depressed" when she made the now deleted post.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Jaclyn's depression was apparently borne out of her deep yearning for her two grown children Andi Eigenmann and Gwen Guck. Andi, whose father is the late actor Mark Gil (real name: Ralph Eigenmann), tends to her own family based in Siargao. Gwen, whose father is musician Kenneth Ilagan, currently studies abroad.
I feel so lonely, so alone,” said Jaclyn, who single handedly raised her children. "Dumarating ako sa punto na nalulungkot ako, hinahanap ko ang mga anak ko. Ganun talaga kapag nanay ka, kahit may kanya-kanya na silang priority sa buhay, hinahanap mo."
She added, "Sana maalala ako ng mga anak ko palagi. If it’s not too much to ask, I know they’re busy. They have their own lives. Andi has a family. My son is studying so hard. Pero gusto ko na sana lagi nila akong naaalala."
Her advice to her fellow single parents: "Siguro before it’s too late, maghanap sila ng katuwang. Yung makakasama sa buhay hangga’t maaga pa.
"Kahit na may mga anak na sila, kung single parent ka, isipin mo, aalis at aalis ang mga ‘yan. Maiiwan kang mag-isa.
"Kailangan ipaunawa rin natin sa mga anak natin. Although minsan, ang kalaban din natin, tayo na mismong mga nanay. Kasi, ayaw nating may masabi ang anak natin or masaktan.
"Kailangang maging matapang ka thinking of your future. Para kung umalis man sila, iiwanan ka, may kanya-kanya nang buhay, e, meron kang makakasama. Mahirap mag-isa. Malungkot mag-isa.”
PokwangADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
When Pokwang (real name: Marietta Subong) confirmed, via Instagram, her separation from Lee O'Brian in July 2022, she also affirmed her devotion to her children.
Pokwang and Lee have a 4-year-old daughter, Malia Francine O'Brian. She has an older daughter, Mae Subong, 26. Her panganay, a boy named Shin, passed away in 1998, while she was working as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
"Natapos man ito sa di inaasahang panahon," Pokwang said of her relationship with Lee, "hindi dito hihinto ang pagiging nanay ko sa mga anak ko." She added, "At mas lalo kong minahal ang mga biyayang sakin ay binigay ng Panginoon."
The actress/TV host/entrepreneur has this to say on being a solo parent: "Hindi karma ang natapos na pagmamahalan kundi mas pinapatatag ka at pinaghahanda ka sa mas magaganda at mas maraming biyaya."
She pointed out, "Hindi karma ang mabiyayaan ka ng mga anak na nagpapasaya at nagpapangiti sayo araw araw at dahilan ng pagsisikap mo sa buhay."
Aiko MelendezADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Aiko Melendez had gotten married and annulled twice: to actor Jomari Yllana (1998-2003) and model Martin Jickain (2006-2010). In each of her marriage, the actress-politician had one child: Andre Yllana and Marthena Jickain, who are now 24 and 16, respectively, and both live with her.
"I didn’t set out to be a single parent," Aiko said in an Instagram post. "I set out to be the best parent I could be. And that has not changed."
She talked about single parenting in an interview with GMANetwork.com: “At first when I got separated, it was so hard not only on Christmas days, lalo na 'pag may Family Days sa school, when you're being required to be with your partner.
"Siyempre ang hirap nun 'di ba, na you see somebody whose family is complete tapos kami ako lang, kumbaga mom and dad ako. Mahirap."
She added, “But ngayon, nagiging strong ka when you have no choice but to be strong. So ako sasabihin ko 'yung hurt and 'yung pain nand'yan pa rin pero siyempre wala akong choice [but] not to show my kids na nalulungkot ako and I tell my kids, 'We may not be complete as a family but you know, my love for you is immeasurable.'
"Hindi ko naman tinatanggalan ng mga papel 'yung dads nila sa buhay nila pero I can say I am 101% there for them."
Geneva CruzADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Geneva Cruz was among the many who reacted to the bad joke made by comedian-politician Tito Sotto during a Senate hearing in May 2017. The then-Senate Majority Leader said to the effect that women who got pregnant out of wedlock were "na-ano lang" (read here).
One of the outspoken single mom celebrities took to Instagram to let her voice be heard on the matter. She wrote in the caption: "Senator Tito Sotto, just so you know, as a mom, I actually did not plan on being single. But in life, we all have to deal with the cards we are dealt the best way we can."
The singer-actress went on explaining, "We single moms all have different stories; some were married, others chose not to have a partner, and some were even raped.
"Raising a #family is difficult enough, we don't need to be ridiculed by you. We need encouragement and opportunities, not belittlement nor obstacles of any kind. Hindi po talaga nakakatawa ang joke ninyo. Anyway, All the best!"
Geneva has two children: Heaven, 26, from her annulled marriage to musician Paco Arespacochaga; and London, 8, from her previous relationship with Filipino-Australian Lee Paulsen.
She admitted in her interview with Smart Parenting that she could've been a better mother when Heaven was growing up but she had other responsibilities. She pointed out, “Pag-breadwinner ka ganoon, you have to work. You can’t stop working."ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
Heaven eventually joined his father Paco in the United States, where the musician migrated following the annulment of his marriage to Geneva.
In 2012, Geneva went to the U.S. to give birth to London and ended up staying there for a few years to make up for the lost time with Heaven.
Mother and son have since repaired their relationship. They remain close even now that Geneva is back in the Philippines for good, with London in tow.

The actress, who hosts the YouTube series Dee's Room, gets to spend a lot of time with Alejandro. Her son has recently resumed attending face-to-face classes.
She pointed out, "Despite the negative circumstances, the unfortunate things that are happening in the world, I just tried my best to look at kung ano pwede kong maging grateful for. And I made the most of what was going on.
"So I really tried my best to make the most out of my time with him at home, to focus on making my heart more beautiful, to be a beautiful mom to him, to be a more beautiful friend to him, to be a more loving life coach kumbaga."
Denise proudly described Alejandro as a kind son: "I must have done something right in my past life na nagkaroon ako ng sobrang chill, cool, and mabait na anak."

"Paano nga ba maging isang magulang? Paano nga ba magdesisyon para sa buhay ng iba?" LJ asked in one of her recent Instagram posts.
She went on sharing her thoughts: "Carried them inside your body for 9 months, will be taking care of them til they can stand on their own, but you never really stop 'taking care' of them. And in the very long time that you have to make decisions on their behalf, paano nga ba piliin ang tama?
"Wala naman handbook for parents. Wala naman iisang tamang paraan kung paano maging magulang. There could be a lot of things that is uncertain and not ideal, but one thing remains certain and true— that LOVE would hold you altogether.
"Narealize ko sobrang daming ups and downs ng buhay. Pero ang importante maramdaman nila na mahal ko sila in every sense of the word. Like how I would always tell them, home is where we are together. At sila lang ang kelangan ko to keep me going."
She added, "We love because God loved us first. And I experience God’s love through them. Kaya naman naguumapaw yung pagmamahal na kaya kong ibigay sa kanila. Hindi ako perfect, pero ang alam ko lang mahal na mahal ko sila— buong buo, siksik na siksik, umaapaw."ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

"Being a single mom," replied Janella when asked by broadcast journalist Bernadette Sembrano about the things she fought for in her personal life. "Talagang nilalaban ko 'yun. At the end of the day, alam kong kaya ko naman siya."
She added, “As much as, yes, I love the people around me who are always there to help me, I always want to know na kaya ko gawin, but I don't want to sound bad kasi, but I can rely on myself, hindi ko kailangan humingi ng tulong sa iba."

“The biggest factor would be weirdly after giving birth, now that I’m a mom, I have more confidence. Parang before kasi I would overthink and I would get anxious about what people are thinking about me and whatever. But now I don’t care, as long as I’m doing this for Jude, I’m doing this for me, I’m doing what I love to do."
One of the industry's newest single mom celebrities has more to say about this new chapter in her life: It's the best thing that happened to me because I'm learning so much. It brings me back to being a baby again, being a kid, so parang I have more patience, empathy, and understanding."
