A letter to my son this pandemic
Today you woke up crying, wanting to go outside. I used to take you out—your face would light up on tricycle rides, your eyes wide as you stumble along grocery aisles.
Now I only take you meters far out the house. On some days you wave happily to the few cars passing by, on other days you end up sad again. Five more minutes under the sun and I take you back inside.
This has been your new normal 84 days into quarantine. Mine has been a makeshift workstation and monthly grocery runs.
I would have signed you up for kiddie school and dressed you on Halloween. There's a farm with this big, red barn I would have liked you to see. It makes me sad, too, but the places I wanted to show you will have to wait. Right now, to keep you home is to keep you safe.

But in its duality of meanings, life also gave something in return. It reminded us of what we seemed to have forgotten in this modern world. Right now, time—more than ever, is a gift we have to be grateful for.
Right now, to keep you home is to keep you safe.
In future history books you will learn how this virus singlehandedly brought the world to a standstill. In my heart of hearts I pray, that stories of its healing will follow, drafting a better normal for the sons and daughters of this generation.
For now, you have this letter and the little wonders we share inside our little home.
