Chynna Ortaleza is discovering the pains and pleasures of being a first-time mom. The GMA-7 actress has a 1-year-old and 5-months-old baby named Stellar with Callalily vocalist Kean Cipriano.
“It’s hard to be a parent, my goodness! I didn’t know what I got myself into. Ha-ha-ha,” Chynna quipped during an interview. As first-time parents, Chynna, 34, and Kean, 30, are still learning the ropes when it comes to disciplining their daughter.
Asked how they deal when Stellar throws tantrums, Chynna replied, “[Stellar is] starting to discover that she actually has a voice. Every month, she displays a new addition to that little personality of hers. Right now, she has started to discover that when she throws like a fake cry, people actually look at her.”
Chynna admitted she and Kean have a “predicament” when it comes to the best method of child discipline. “My husband doesn’t want [to] spank. Ako naman, I grew up, yung ganon…spanking with a belt.
“So sabi ko, ‘How are we gonna discipline, Peanut? We can’t just always talk and talk to her. There’s got to be some like 'golpe de gulat,' as my mom says, so that medyo ma-sense niya na may figure of authority siya. Right now, what we’re trying to do is really like explain things to her.”

Chynna does seek advice from more experienced parents such as Regine Velasquez, who was her co-star in the recently concluded GMA-7 primetime series, Mulawin vs. Ravena. Chynna shared what Asia’s Songbird explained to her about disciplining a toddler.
“Sabi sa akin ni Ate Regine even if Stellar is one [year old] she understands. 'Don’t underestimate that kid.' 'Cause she started disciplining Nate at 1,” referring to Regine’s son, who is turning 6 years old this November.
“Pero [Regine] doesn’t use her hands kasi for nurturing daw yon. So she always has this white belt daw na naka-hang, so 'pag nakikita ni Nate ganon, alam niya na, ‘masa-spank ako 'pag bad ako,’ ganon. So maybe I’m gonna research more on that.”
With discipline techniques on her mind, Chynna says of parenthood, “Iba siya. Kaya nga it’s true when you have your own kids, that’s when you start appreciating your parents more. Kasi it’s not easy.”

Chynna says she has wondered how her mom raised three kids. "I don’t even want to consider another kid," Chynna remarks. "Sabi ni mommy sinasabi ko lang yan. 'Pag lumaki, mamimiss ko daw ang amoy ng baby 'tapos gusto ko na [magka-baby]."
But Chynna insists she and her husband are not rushing to have Baby Number 2. “We both feel very comfortable with one. Kasi nga we’re still trying to figure this out. If it comes, it comes, ganon na lang, rock 'n roll talaga."
For now, the couple looks like they are busy preparing for their church wedding with their recent prenup photos shared on Instagram. Read more here.
