  • Kids World Integrated School: Inclusiveness And Passion For Teaching

    For parents who are looking for a full service school for their child with special needs, Kids World Integrated School is an alternative they can consider. Our special education expert, Frances Magtoto, interviews school directress, Dr. Ingrid Yap.

    A Full Service School
    She believes that a preschool can provide a holistic experience, use developmentally appropriate practices, staff that are competent as well as genuinely care for the children.  This is why they use inclusive education practices, and continually do research on best practices to address the needs of the students enrolled in our school.  Kids World is a full service school, wherein additional support can be provided through the pull-out system or resource room.  It houses a multidisciplinary team working as collaborators to ensure the success of each student.


    A Theme Of Inclusiveness
    They accept children from two to seven in their early intervention and preschool programs. These two programs are linked as children with special needs are included in these groups either for socialization or integration in certain subjects.  This inclusive set-up shows much success for those in the regular track and those with special needs; both programs have had graduates who have moved up to the “big schools”.  Those from their regular track go to nearby schools Xavier School, ICA, La Salle, and Poveda.
    Aside from these programs, they also have a special needs program (in progressive placement levels 1:1, dyad, group) depending on the student.  


    All students with special needs have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and are served by a multi-disciplinary team composed of the SPED teacher, occupational therapist (OT), and speech pathologist.  There are times when the regular school teacher is included if the student is enrolled in a regular school aside from being enrolled in Kids World for additional services.  They also have a multi-age/multi level group of students accessing the regular curriculum at their own pace. And a pre-vocational program for children 12 years and above to help them get ready to transition into their home and community. All the students are monitored using the non-graded system instead of the Progress Report Card.


    A Passion To Teach
    When asked about her personal belief regarding teaching children, Dr. Yap answers, “I believe that to be a good teacher, one must be a teacher of all children. One must have the passion to teach, the patience to nurture, and an openness to see how your teaching is being received and perceived by the child.  Teaching is a dynamic profession; one must constantly learn to be effective.”
