Too Harsh? Mom Cancels Playdate With Unvaccinated KidOne mom stands firm in her decision not to let her child near one who is not vaccinated — and gets the support of many.by Lei Dimarucut-Sison .
Playdates are as much for moms as they are for the kids because you get to be with friends. Setting up one or being invited to one is always exciting because it is comforting to be in the company of people who understand your joys and struggles. A playdate is a fun and safe haven both for a parent and a child.
And safety was in the mind of one mom when she canceled an entire playdate after finding out that one child in the group did not get vaccinated.
"Canceled a play date today because I found out the other kid isn’t vaccinated," posted Reddit user "humboldtw3," who manages a Facebook group that sets people up for playdates.

She added that the unvaccinated kid's mom asked her, "If your kid is vaccinated, then what’s the big deal?" Her implication: mom hosting the playdate should not have anything to worry about if her child is protected by the vaccine.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
She, however, was firm on her stand. In her post, she added, "Nope. Not sorry. My kid is still a week or two away from being able to get his MMR. And I don’t hang out with people who neglect their children by not vaccinating."CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos

"I blocked her and removed her from the playdate Facebook group [where I am the] admin so she won’t inflict her dangerous views on anyone else," she added. "That might seem harsh but I would feel personally responsible if I found out her kid had given another kid from the group a preventable disease that they were too young to be vaccinated against."

The World Health Organization has recently released its list of top 10 global health threats of 2019, which includes for the first time "vaccine hesitancy," defined as the "reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccines." Of late, there has been a resurgence of diseases, particularly measles, that have earlier been eradicated by vaccines here and abroad.
In late January, the state of Washington in the U.S. declared a state of emergency over a measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest.
In the Philippines, Secretary Francisco Duque III of the Department of Health yesterday declared a measles outbreak in Metro Manila and Central Luzon, while other regions remain on close watch.
