Charity begins at home, and in the Belo household, it’s a value they’ve been espousing since 2011 when Belo Smiles started. The advocacy project hopes to make a difference in the lives of young kids who were born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate and, literally, make them smile again.
This year, Dr. Vicki Belo, Dr. Hayden Kho, Jr. and Cristalle Belo-Pitt chose to do their outreach at the Sta. Ana Hospital in Manila, and were targeting to operate on a total of 70 kids.
According to a Belo Beauty Instagram Story, an operation costs about Php 40,000 for each child, but through this year’s outreach themed #BeloGoestheExtraSmile, the patients’ families won’t have to worry about any expense because it’s all for free courtesy of the Belo Beauty group and Operation Smile.
The Belo-Kho and Belo-Pitt families have also found a deeper meaning to this project because they have been able to introduce it to the youngest members of their family: Hayden and Vicki’s daughter Scarlet, 4 years old, and Cristalle and husband Justin Pitt’s son Hunter, 1 year old. Look, the little ones even wore their own Belo Goes the Extra Smile scrub suits!

In 2018, SmartParenting.com.ph spoke to Dr. Vicki about lessons they wish to teach their daughter through this advocacy. Although Scarlet was still too young to fully comprehend, Dr. Vicki was sure they were headed the right track.
“I was afraid that because she’s only 3, Scarlet might not understand. But she held their hands, she took a picture with them. It’s a nice start.
“I think you should do it by modeling. Basically she sees me, she sees her dad involved,” she had said.
Among the celebrities who showed support this year were Iza Calzado, Isabelle Daza, and Toni Gonzaga. Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno was also present on the third day of surgeries, and thanked the Belo group for their selflessness.
