  • Potty-training can be a challenging stage of development; it’s hard to know when you might have a poop emergency somewhere in your house (or even outdoors). Nowadays, there are various kinds of tools you can get to help you in potty training your child. In an article for Mom.com, one woman shares that she used an item widely known to help ease bowel movements—the Squatty Potty!

According to the Squatty Potty website, there is a bend in the colon and the anus which keeps stool inside while you’re not on the toilet. The more common position of sitting upright on a toilet causes that bend to be blocked and makes passing stool more difficult.

On the other hand, squatting is considered the most natural position to assume when pooping because it straightens out that bend and makes it easier to pass stool. Using devices like the Squatty Potty, which can be placed around the base of a toilet, you assume the squatting position while sitting on the toilet and have a smoother pooping experience.

While research has shown that the Squatty Potty might be effective, mom Layla Laurence also says that it worked wonders for her when she used it to potty-train her child.

She writes that to help in potty-training her child, she bought a potty chair “to make going to the bathroom easier and more enticing at home.”

Her son ended up loving the potty chair a little too much. She writes, “He was afraid of the regular toilet, so we had to lug that dang potty frog every single place we went — or risk an accident, tantrum, or sobbing meltdown.”

While browsing through Amazon, Layla found the Squatty Potty. She was instantly intrigued by it, sharing that she was drawn to the fact that it is a step stool that could help her child get on and off the toilet. She purchased a Squatty Potty and quickly found it to be a “game-changer!”

“My [child] immediately learned to use it as a step stool to get on and off the toilet ‘on her own self’ and learned to go potty in a regular toilet from the get-go,” Layla says.

“While the bathrooms at most businesses, stores, and other people’s houses do not have a Squatty Potty, she was comfortable sitting on the big toilet. This made using ANY potty a breeze.”

She continues, “This silly step stool has made potty-training and living with a newly potty-trained toddler much more enjoyable.”

Finally, Layla reveals that the Squatty Potty also proved to be beneficial for the rest of her family: “[T]hanks to this little potty-training hack I’ve discovered, we’re all pooping like champs.”
