  • Summer is here — not officially, but can't you feel the heat? And what else is there to do in summer but swim? If you're a parent to a toddler, you know how much they love the water, so a refreshing dip and making a splash in the pool is probably one of your favorite activities together.

Foremost to consider when you go swimming with your little one is safety. That means your toddler must have the following: a suitable outfit for swimming, reliable floaters, eye protection, sun protection lotion, and... swim diapers.

Many moms who are not familiar with swim diapers would think that these are similar to the regular disposable diaper — that is incorrect. Swim diapers are not the same as your regular disposable diapers.  Imagine this: if your toddler used a regular diaper, which absorbs liquid, in a swimming pool, the diaper would be soaked in no time. Swim diapers are not absorbent, they don't catch pee, and they are not meant to be used with regular diapers

So what are swim diapers for?

The primary purpose of swim diapers is to catch solids, or poop, to prevent embarrassing "accidents" while your toddler who isn't potty trained yet is swimming. Should that happen, you can quickly bring your toddler out of the water without worrying about "floaters" (or getting the ire of other people in the pool). According to several moms we talked to, some establishments like resorts and hotels now require babies to wear swim diapers when using the swimming pool.

Qualities of a good swim diaper

A good swim diaper uses lightweight and waterproof fabric, has a mesh inner lining for easy clean-up, is adjustable to your toddler's weight and size, and has snug leg holes, so nothing slips out.

There are reusable and disposable types, and pull-ups and snap-ons, but more moms go for the reusable type not only because it's more cost-effective in the long run (especially if you go swimming often), but also because it is eco-friendly and works as promised. A swim diaper with a pretty design is also a plus!
