When election results began showing Leni Robredo taking the lead from Bongbong Marcos Jr., allegations of cheating and widespread hate were hurled against her especially on social media. But there was one particularly vicious basher, whom Robredo mentioned during an interview with GMA News.
“May nag post sa Facebook. 'Napaka evil mo. Sana ikaw na lang ‘yung nasa eroplanong bumagsak, hindi ‘yung asawa mo',” she said. “Ako na-tempt na ako na sagutin, 'Hindi mo lang alam na nung bumagsak ‘yung eroplano ng asawa ko, every day, every night, wini-wish ko na sana ako na lang ‘yung nasa eroplanong yun.” (Robredo’s husband, the late interior secretary Jesse Robredo died in a plane crash that was deemed an accident in 2012.)
The way she resisted the basher’s post and calmly addressed the issue isn't something we can all pull off. It's hard not to take such attacks on your family personally. It's just not insensitive--it's a below-the-belt blow no one deserves. [UPDATE: The basher, a 16-year-old, already apologized for her remarks. Read it here.]ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW

The way we--not just the candidates--conduct ourselves in victory and defeat is often more important than the competition itself. One of the best examples came from these college-age kids who encountered Mar Roxas at a burger joint where Roxas went after delivering his concession speech. According to Julliane Love de Jesus, multimedia reporter for Inquirer.net, students who were in the same restaurant approached Roxas and offered to pray over him.
Josh Torres, one of the students who joined the prayer, tweeted a photo with the former interior secretary and captioned it, "And at the end of it all, you’re still just man. Limited and flawed, but God is greater and so is His love. @MARRoxas."
Many netizens reacted positively to the tweets, lauding the act as "good" and courageous." The students showed respect and set a great example of sportsmanship.
When candidates proclaim their concession, it's not just an admittance of defeat, but it is to proclaim their solidarity and cooperation to the winning candidate. It is one of the ways on how we can begin the country's healing process for positive change. Let us put the bashing and the hateful comments aside.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
