I am a first-time mom in this generation where almost everything can be easily accessed, including a photo or a video of your child inside the tummy, thanks to the wonders of ultrasound scans. Gone are the days when you eagerly wait for the day your child is born before you know it is a he or a she. Now in just a few clicks, side, and turn of the baby, you have your baby’s very first photos, and you have not even held him or her yet.
I remember having done four fetal ultrasound sessions during my whole pregnancy. Three were mandatory, and the other one was a 3D/4D scan. Was the 3D/4D scan necessary? Nope. My doctor didn’t tell me to have that extra ultrasound -- my pregnancy had no complications.
I insisted on having the 3D/4D scan because yes, I wanted a keepsake of my daughter inside my tummy. And I would do it again because we felt such joy in our hearts when we received copies of her photos and videos.

The typical fetal ultrasound is 2D (two-dimensional image). It's a lot of black, but the white outlines form the shape of your baby and his internal organs. It is flat, though, and that is why many parents love the 3D scan (three-dimensional image). The 4D scan (four-dimensional image) captures your baby in motion, yes, just like a video. Of course, 3D/4D ultrasound scans come comes with a higher price than your standard 2D.
