Many parents get their first glimpse of their baby via ultrasound. Sometimes, you get a gem, though, such as seeing your baby suck his thumb, wave, or pee!
Earth Mama Organics shared an ultrasound video of a baby caught peeing in the womb! Yes, you read that right. The baby is 21 weeks and five days.
"We guess this kid didn't get the memo about not peeing in the pool," read the caption.
You can clearly see the urine stream from between the baby's legs. It may be confusing (or disgusting?) to think that babies in utero do that in the same pool they swim in, but it's part of development.
Babies peeing in the womb is a sign of good development
The video was initially posted in September 2019 by Turkish doctor Ümit Korucuo?lu. He explains why it's a good sign of a baby's development in the womb.
"Especially after the 20th week, the most important component of amniotic fluid is fetal urine," his caption read. It's a sign that the baby's kidneys are working well, making enough urine.
Yes, the baby's urine mixes with the amniotic fluid. It's the same fluid that the baby "breathes" to help vital in the lungs' proper development and swallow to help his digestive system's development.
Don't worry about it too much. Your amniotic fluid also contains skin cells that your baby sheds as he grows. It's why some genetic tests use the fluid to check for your unborn baby's health.
