For nine months, a pregnant mom not only has to take good care of her body and her growing baby inside, she also has to undergo several procedures to further ensure both their safety. Bernardita Calayan-Brion, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist, obstetric sonologist, and cervical colposcopist who holds clinics at the Asian Hospital in Alabang, The New Medical City in Ortigas, and San Pablo Doctors Hospital in Laguna, enumerates routine and optional tests expecting mothers experience, as seen in the chart.
Why the pregnancy tests?
“Certain tests can help your obstetrician uncover possible problems or diseases during the pregnancy. They also protect the baby against the effects of these problems if discovered and treated early,” says Brion. Other tests will depend on the medical and family history, ethnic background, and results of other examinations.
Some of these tests will be done more than once. “No test is perfect. There may be a problem even if the test does not show it. Also, the problem may not exist even if the test does show it,” Brion adds.
