There have been no health warnings for pregnant women against this artificial sweetener. However, women with phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited inborn error of body chemistry, should avoid food and drinks containing aspartame. Phenylalanine, a substance which comprises 50 percent of aspartame, can cause irreversible brain damage and death, especially when used in high quantities or during pregnancy by those with PKU.
