Why Emergency CS happens?
Smart Parenting asked Dr. Camilla Fernandez-de Dios, an OB-Gyn Graduate of St. Luke's Medical Center, Quezon City on what factors do doctors consider before deciding that the mother will undergo an emergency C-section procedure to deliver her baby.CONTINUE READING BELOWRecommended Videos
"Usually we have warning signs that tell us when there is an immediate need for delivery," she said.
"One, patient has had previous cesarean delivery, and is having contractions upon checkup. We do an internal examination (IE), and the cervix is open, meaning labor is ensuing and delivery should be expedited. We call this CS for scarred uterus - meaning there was a previous major OR involving the uterus and if mag contract there's a risk na magrupture yung uterus because of the previous surgeries."
She adds, a CS operation will be ordered when fetal bradycardia or low fetal heart rate is observed. "On handheld doppler, fetal heart rate of <120bpm is suspicious. We call this CS for Non-Reassuring Fetal Status / Non-Reassuring Fetal Heartrate Pattern."
Dr. Fernandez-de Dios also said that it can be based on ultrasound results. "Upon a series of ultrasound results, we see changes in the doppler (reversal in flow, etc) that warrants delivery because the uterus is no longer a "healthy environment" for the fetus and it can cause more harm than good if we continue on with the pregnancy.
"Other factors include, no growth in the fetus, anhydramnios - meaning the amniotic fluid is almost zero, poor BPS score (score of 2-4/8)," she adds.
In the end, she said, "Basically, it depends on your OB Gyn because it's her call."
