  • Mariel Padilla gave birth to her second daughter, Maria Gabriela, last November 15, 2019, but now the mom of two is “officially introducing” her baby girl to the world by offering a glimpse of her birthing story on her YouTube channel.

The 19-minute vlog starts with Mariel’s final check-up with her ob-gyn, Dr. Cynthia Mangubat. Mariel voices out her worries, which includes her apprehension that her doctor may not be in the U.S. when she finally gives birth.

Thankfully, Gabriela was able to wait for Dr. Mangubat, who arrived on November 14, which is coincidentally the birthday of Mariel's firstborn, Maria IsabellaOn the morning of November 15, Mariel, her dad Abelardo, and her Tita Maricon went to the hospital so she could be induced. According to Mariel, her perinatologist (a doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies), suggested that she give birth on her 39th week up to six days after.

At the hospital, Mariel was injected with Pitocin, a synthetic version of oxytocin, which is the hormone the body naturally produces to induce contractions. Once her contractions began, you could clearly see in the video that she was in pain.

In a voiceover, Mariel explained that when the pain kicked in, she had asked for anesthesia through the IV. “It’s starting to hurt a lot and the contractions are getting [closer to each other], although I’m only 3 ½ cm [dilated],” she narrated. The pain, however, continued and Mariel had to ask for an epidural eventually.

After six hours of labor, Mariel’s water broke, and she was fully dilated. Surrounded by her nurses, with her tita holding her hand, Mariel started to push.

After six rounds of pushing, a loud but beautiful cry was heard on the video. Mariel managed to look calm, but her eyes showed her happiness. “Hi, love, it’s mommy!” she whispered when Gabriela was placed on her chest for immediate skin-to-skin contact. (She also managed to breastfeed a few moments later.)

Mariel recounted the moment she gave birth. “I felt that the people were panicking kasi bumaba yung heart rate niya. So I felt I really needed to push, push real hard and push real fast,” she shares.

When Gabriela came out and she was given to Mariel, she only had a few seconds with her baby. “Binigay lang sa ’kin, pinakita, tapos dinala na. Kasi, she was already grayish-purple,” she explains.

The mom of two said she decided to film this special moment for her fans: they had been with her throughout her journey, from the time she found out, to the baby showers, to the struggles she went through, so she also wanted to share her family’s biggest blessing, which is the birth of their second daughter.

“This was the moment I’ve been waiting for. Finally, I was going to meet Gabriela,” she says in the video.

Mariel also felt she had to show all the moments behind the scenes that pregnant women go through that people don’t usually get to see.

"I knew it wasn’t going to be easy that Robin and I weren’t going to be together when I deliver Gabriela, but we decided to make some sacrifices for our kids. During labor, all I can think of is Isabella and Robin, all moms out there understand why. I am now sharing it with you guys because I want you to see the beauty above all the pain of giving birth," she writes in the video's description.

“All those nights na hindi na ako makatulog kasi hindi na ako maka-pwesto, ‘yung feeling mo talaga na naubos na ‘yung ganda mo, talagang hirap ka na, ‘yung manas na manas ka na. It really happens and it’s okay," she says in the video.

She adds, “I know it doesn’t end here. We have a long way to go. Tayong mga mommas, we have to help each other out.”
