  • Childbirth is a miraculous but extremely tiring event, which is why it is crucial for new moms to take extra care of their bodies during the postpartum period. Experts say postpartum recovery can take six months, so take your time and allow your body to heal.

    Build a postpartum recovery kit

To help you care for your body after baby, here are some essentials you’ll need in your postpartum recovery kit that can help make healing easier and maybe even faster.

    Maternity pads

As your uterus shrinks to its original size and your body gets rid of the extra blood and tissue, expect lochia or bloody vaginal discharge. It can last up to six to eight weeks, so maternity pads will help greatly — for the first three to 10 days, you may be changing pads every hour.

Try Modess Maternity Pads (Php110 for a pack of 7), or even adult diapers for the first few days when bleeding is heavier.

    Feminine wash

Your vagina may feel sore after giving birth due to natural tearing or your episiotomy. According to moms in our Smart Parenting Village, most doctors prescribed them a feminine wash with antibacterial properties to help prevent infections.

Try Gynepro Antiseptic Feminine Wash (Php149.50 for the 150ml bottle).

    Wound cleansers and antiseptics

If you had a Cesarean section, ask your doctor for the products that can best clean and treat your incision wound. Some moms shared that they were prescribed hydrogen peroxide, so the wound dries up quickly.

For wound antiseptics, they were given Betadine, Cutasept, or Hyclens. Try Cutasept (Php275.50 per 50ml) which comes in a spray bottle, making it easier to use.

    Nipple cream

If you’re breastfeeding, a nipple cream can help soothe sore or cracked nipples. You may also try breast milk, which some moms swear by.

Try Lucas Papaw Ointment (Php599), a multipurpose, natural product that moms love.

Apart from being used as a nipple cream, you can also use it to heal minor skin ailments like nappy rash, chafing, insect bites, and more. Just make sure to wipe it off before letting your baby feed. Available at Watsons.

    Body butter

Most moms see stretch marks as “battle scars,” which is a reminder of their strength as a woman. But if you’d like to lighten them, there are products that can help.

Some moms swear by Palmer’s Tummy Butter (Php695), which is recommended to use during and after pregnancy.

It’s made from cocoa and shea butter which helps keep the skin moisturized for up to 48 hours. Available at Watsons.

    Body wash

For many new moms, a quick shower or bath offers respite from the demands of motherhood. If this is your form of self-care, treat yourself to a product that helps calm and refresh you.

Try the Dove relaxing lavender body wash (Php243 for the 400ml bottle) which not only gives you soft and smooth skin but also leaves you smelling and feeling good.
