Pasig River Esplanade: Family Fun by the Riverside
Here’s what families need to know before visiting.

A new destination has been added to the city’s must-visit spots with the opening of the Pasig River Esplanade’s Phase 4 section on October 20. The expansion marks another step in the ongoing transformation of the riverside.
The new 530-meter stretch offers open space for walking, biking, and sightseeing, with paved paths, bike lanes, bridges, and future commercial areas. It connects the existing esplanade behind the Manila Central Post Office to Arroceros Forest Park, improving access to landmarks such as Quiapo, the Metropolitan Theater, and Manila City Hall.
Things to See and Do at the Pasig River Esplanade
The Pasig River Esplanade, which opened in January 2024, is stroller-friendly. Kids on bikes have a safer space to move around, and seniors can relax on viewing decks without feeling rushed or crowded.
Visit in the late afternoon and you’ll catch the sun dipping behind the skyline. Stay a little longer and the riverbank comes alive as streetlights switch on, bridges glow with color, and the whole stretch takes on a mellow, date-night feel perfect for couples.

A few food stalls have already popped up in some areas, selling street snacks, drinks, and handheld treats that kids can carry while walking. It’s not a full-blown dining strip yet, but it gives parents somewhere to pause before moving to nearby districts for dinner.

A short walk takes you to Binondo for siopao and dumplings; go the other way and you’re steps from Intramuros for coffee, kalesa photos, or a heritage stroll. Escolta, with its old-Manila charm and indie cafés, is close enough for a quick detour. Even without a car, getting there isn’t complicated. Jeepneys, UVs, and trains drop passengers within walking distance of different entry points.

The first three phases of the project have already opened sections behind the Manila Central Post Office and linked parts of the promenade to Fort Santiago and Plaza Mexico. The long-term vision is a full 25-kilometer stretch of riverfront spanning multiple cities, something that would give Manila one of the longest waterfront promenades in Asia.

For families tired of malls and crowded playgrounds, the esplanade offers a better escape. Slowly but surely, it’s becoming a popular spot for parents and kids to enjoy the outdoors without breaking the bank. It’s open to the public daily, with fountain and light displays running from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
