In Toy Story 5, the Villain Is a Tablet

Toy Story 5 hits theaters in 2026, but Pixar is already building buzz. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on June 13, the studio revealed new details about the upcoming film, including an unexpected villain: a children’s tablet.

Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter previewed the film’s opening two minutes and revealed a key part of the story. This time, the toys are going head-to-head with technology. The tagline, “Toys meet Tech,” sets the tone for the central conflict, where Bonnie, now eight years old, receives a new device called the LilyPad. 

The original voice cast also returns, with Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie.

The film is written and directed by Andrew Stanton, known for Finding Nemo, WALL-E, and Finding Dory, and is produced by Jessica Choi. Although Pixar confirmed the project in 2023, they have kept most of the story under wraps until now.

The Toy Story franchise remains one of the most beloved and successful animated series in film history. Since its debut in 1995, it has grossed more than $3.2 billion worldwide and earned multiple Academy Awards, including two for Best Animated Feature. Its influence on animation and storytelling continues to shape Pixar’s legacy.
