Dads Told Us These Lessons—Maybe You’ll Pass Them On Too

Published on Jun 19, 2025
Dads don’t always say things outright, but they’re always teaching. It shows in how they live, work, or show up. It’s not that they don’t feel things. They do. They’re just not the most vocal beings, or maybe they think saying too much chips away at their cool-dad image. And sometimes, they’re just not sure when the right moment is, so the words stay tucked away longer.
But even in the quiet, a dad is thinking about the kind of person his child is becoming. He also hopes they figure things out sooner. Learn what he didn’t, or at least learn it more gently.
This Father’s Day, we asked the dads of the Smart Parenting Village, a 113,000-strong community of Filipino parents: What’s one lesson you hope to pass on to your child—and maybe to the rest of us too? Because every now and then, we need to hear these things said out loud.
What SPV Dads Hope Their Kids Learn Sooner
Integrity Matters
“One of the most important life lessons I hope to share with my son Jazz is the value of integrity—doing what is right, even when no one is watching. I want him to understand that honesty, responsibility, and kindness build trust and respect, not just with others but within himself.”
Glenn Dela Cruz
Don’t Settle for Less
“One life lesson I hope to pass on to my daughters is to always know their worth and never settle for less than they deserve.”
Ericson Garcia
Grow Through Mistakes
“This is something my own Papa used to tell me, and now as a father of two, I’m passing it on to my eldest: mistakes don’t define you. They’re a natural part of learning and growing. Everyone makes them, and they’re often the stepping stones to becoming wiser and stronger. What matters most isn’t avoiding mistakes, but how you respond—take responsibility, learn from them, and keep moving forward. You are not your mistakes. You are who you choose to become after them.”
Jericho Madrid
Keep the Spark Alive
“As the sole provider for our family, the life lesson I want to share with my kids, especially my son, is to never stop providing for your family, and never lose the spark you had for your [future] wife since day one.”
Mark Madriaga
Let Character Guide You
“As a dad, one life lesson I hope to pass on to my two kids is that your character will always matter more than your circumstances. I learned that from my own Papa. He’s been a fish vendor for as long as I can remember—waking up before sunrise, carrying heavy banyeras filled with fish, and working long, tiring hours just to provide for us. He never complained. He stayed humble, kind, and quietly strong through it all.”
Glenn Amazona
Strong People Don’t Bully
“The life lesson and values I want to pass on to my children are simple: be kind to everyone. Life is easier when you’re kind, understanding, and tolerant of people’s differences. I want them to know that being a bully and hurting others is never right. Be good to the ones you love—in the end, all we really have is each other.”
Ryan Vergara
Choose Kindness Daily
“Probably the life lesson I’d like to pass on to my children is to do random acts of kindness every day, whenever possible. I also want them to understand the deeper meaning of the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you, not just because it’s right, but because it feels good to make someone happy.”
Arnel Manio
Stand Up for Love
“To my son Yuhan, always remember this: real strength isn’t about how many times you win, but how many times you fall and still choose to stand up, especially for the people you love.”
Jun Miguel
Own Your Struggles, Keep Rising
“Walang masama kung sa ngayon ikaw ay nasa baba. Ang mahalaga, ikaw ay mulat sa iyong sitwasyon at may paninindigan na mangarap at bumangon sa buhay.”
Mark Mendoza
Meet Life with Grit and Faith
“Life lesson na lagi kong sinasabi sa mga anak ko: ang buhay ay hindi madali. May hirap at kasiyahan, at dapat matutunan ninyong maging matatag, may paniniwala sa Diyos, at harapin ang mga pagsubok ng buhay.”
Alvin Orollo
Be Street Smart, Not Just Book Smart
“Life lesson na gusto kong i-share sa mga anak ko: hindi lang talino sa aral ang mahalaga, kundi pati rin sa totoong buhay.”
Kevin Mercado
