What makes a birthday celebration truly happy and grand for our children? Celebrity mom Anne Curtis shared her personal reflections as her family celebrated Dahlia’s 4th birthday.
Dahlia's birthday at the beach
Anne took to Instagram to post a video of her and Erwan Heussaff’s daughter, Dahlia’s birthday celebration. The video showcases the family enjoying a day at the beach with family and friends, indulging in a boodle fight meal, engaging in traditional Filipino games like pabitin for the children, and adorable Dahlia blowing out her Little Mermaid-themed cake.
“A week ago we spent the weekend away to celebrate the 4th year of life of our little one,” Anne shared in the caption. “I guess as parents we tend to overthink if our kids need a big party and whether or not that’s what will make them happy.”
“I’m sure it does BUT what we realized is that sometimes being in a fun, close knit and loving environment with her family and besties is more than enough. (She did ask when the Little Mermaid show was going to start though [joy and mermaid emojis]),” Anne emphasized. “Happy Birthday to our Dahlia Amélie,” she concluded.
Anne’s post received birthday greetings from friends and well-wishers, with many also applauding her perspective on celebrations.
One comment reads, “You gave her the best things in life with this experience [heart and kissing heart emojis].”
While another one said, “That was the best way to celebrate her birthday, around family at a place she could run around, play with her cousins and besties and be carefree. That’s what kids need and not a party staged by parents. You’re the best parents @annecurtissmith and @erwan. You allow Dahlia to just be a kid, and expose her to nature. Awesome parents indeed!!! [heart, clapping hands, two hearts emojis]”

Prioritizing what makes our children happy
Anne’s post serves as a gentle reminder that children can find joy even in simple celebrations, as long as they are with their loved ones. It’s a call to listen to our children’s wishes, recognizing that happiness can stem from the most uncomplicated activities, such as a small picnic in the park, a day spent baking together, or a playdate with their close friends.
If you’re still having second thoughts, here are a few more reasons to consider having a more intimate celebration for your child’s next birthday party:
1. Focus on what truly matters
A simple birthday celebration puts the focus back on what truly enriches these occasions–love, togetherness, and happiness. It’s about creating a space where children feel loved and content, emphasizing quality time over quantity of decorations or guests.
2. Minimal stress and pressure
Big parties can be overwhelming, having a significant amount of stress and expectations for both parents and children. With simpler celebrations, families can avoid the downsides of over-planning and just concentrate on enjoying the moment.
3. Encourages creativity and imagination
Smaller and more personalized celebrations better encourage children to use their imagination and get creative with their activities. This can be more fulfilling and fun for them.
4. Foster closer relationships
Intimate celebrations allow children to spend quality time with family and close friends, fostering stronger relationships. Such moments are the ones children and their loved ones are more likely to remember and cherish the most.
5. Impart valuable lessons
Simplified celebrations can also teach children valuable lessons about the importance of simplicity, contentment, and the value of personal interactions over material items.
Ultimately, the child’s happiness and desires should be at the heart of any birthday celebration. And Anne’s post reminds us that we should also listen and consider what our kids genuinely want. As doing so not only ensures a memorable and joyful birthday but also reinforces the child’s sense of being heard and valued. Additionally, simpler celebrations are also stress-free yet enriching for the whole family.
