The Tragic Inspiration Behind Eric Clapton's 'Tears in Heaven'

In 1991, Eric Clapton experienced an unspeakable tragedy when his son, Conor, died after falling from the window of their 53rd-floor apartment in New York City. Devastated, the rock legend withdrew from the world as he tried to process his grief. It was from this heartbreaking loss that he wrote the iconic song, "Tears in Heaven."

Who was Conor Clapton?

Born on August 21, 1986, Conor Loren was the only son of musician Eric Clapton and his then-girlfriend, Italian actress Lory Del Santos. When Eric met Lory, he was on the verge of ending his marriage with first wife, Pattie Boyd, an English model.

Eric and Pattie tried for children but were never successful, even after trying in vitro fertilization. It was the main reason for their separation. Due to struggles in his parents' relationship, Conor lived with Lory, his mother, and Eric would only visit them in New York City.

According to police reports, Conor was playing with his nanny in his mother's apartment in Manhattan, which was high up on the 53rd floor, when the incident occurred. Meanwhile, his mother was in the bathroom. As four-year-old Conor and his nanny were running around, he accidentally went straight through the huge window, which a janitor had left open moments earlier. Conor, who wore red pajamas and slippers, landed on the roof of a four-story building next to theirs. He died on March 20, 1991.

His death was similar to that of the recent incident that happened in Cebu City, Philippines, wherein a four-year-old child slipped through a condominium window and landed on a canopy on the 3rd floor.

The day before the incident

The day before Conor Clapton died was a special one. Lory and Conor were in New York to spend the Easter holidays with Eric. That day, Eric and his son spent time at the circus on Long Island. Conor was so excited even when they got home, as he couldn’t stop talking about the fun they had during their trip. And what heightened his excitement even more was that Eric had promised to take him and his mother to the central zoo the next day. This memory was later on memorialized through Eric Clapton's song, "Circus."

After Conor's death, Eric Clapton spent a year in Antigua and turned to music to help deal with his grief. Later, he returned to work and started writing music for the film Rush. "Tears in Heaven," which is an emotional song about loss, appeared on the soundtrack for the film and was co-written by Will Jennings.

Eric Clapton once shared in an interview that he already had the song in his head for a long time, he just couldn't find the reason to make it come alive until he was struck by the tragedy. 

"Tears in Heaven" became a critically-acclaimed ballad, which won multiple awards including six Grammys.

In December 2023, he had an intimate concert filmed in London for the benefit of the children displaced in Gaza.
