    January: Komik Fest

    Where: Venture Space, Mandaluyong

Komik Fest is an event that celebrates the local comic book community and provides a space to showcase their work and interact with fans. As the event promotes independent comics, you will find unique works that may not be readily available in major stores. Attending this event is a great opportunity for artistically inclined children to learn more about the medium of visual storytelling and the great effort that goes into it. There will be talks throughout the day given by notable guest speakers who are thriving in the industry, as well as fun activities for the attendees. Who knows? It may inspire your own brood to start sketching and selling their works here in the future.

Komik Fest will be held on January 25, from 10:00am-7:00pm. The entrance fee is Php100/head and Php80 for students, seniors, and PWDs (ID required). Children who are below the height of the registration table will be given free admission.

February: Studio Ghibli Launch on Netflix

Where: Right in the comfort of your home!

This is not a drill! Studio Ghibli will be rolling out 21 titles on the streaming platform within a span of three months. These Japanese animated films are known for their timeless art style, whimsical stories, and mouthwatering cartoon food. Perhaps this calls for a special kind of weekend movie marathon (in moderation), which you can stretch out on a weekly basis!

You can prepare snacks based on the films (the best part) such as the ramen in  Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008). Take it one step further and casually dress up in costume as any of the characters. (Totoro, anyone?)

    Recommended Videos

The movies launching for February are Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Only Yesterday (1991), Porco Rosso (1992), Ocean Waves (1993), and Tales from Earthsea (2006). The films coming out in the following months (March and April) include Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001) Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and more!

    March: Batman Night Run

    Where: Arca South, Taguig

Running can get quite challenging during the summer due to the sweltering heat. The Batman Night Run offers a cooler solution by holding the event much later in the day, from late afternoon to early evening. Each participant will receive a finisher’s medal shaped like the Batman logo with a special rock-style stand sold separately. Now your kids can make like the Caped Crusader and safely run about the city while you tag along as their ever-faithful sidekick! Don’t forget to physically condition yourselves for the big day by organizing regular weekend runs with the family.

The Batman Night Run will be held on March 21, 2020 and starts at 5:00pm. Available packages include the following: 1KM Kids Night Run at 5:00pm (P800), 1KM Kids Night Run with One Adult at 5:00pm (P1,500), 3KM Night Run at 7:00pm (P1,000), and 5KM Night Run at 6:00pm (P1,200).

    April: Pet Trade Show

    Where: Ayala Malls Manila Bay

Instead of the usual pet supply run, why don’t you make a whole trip of it? Bring those beloved fur friends along for the ride and take them on a shopping trip when you visit the two-day trade show featuring the latest in pet pampering. For those being hounded — pardon the pun — by the children to finally get a family pet, this is your chance to school them on the real-life responsibilities of caring for animal companions.

The Pet Summit Philippines’ Pet Trade Show will have free admission and take place April 4-5, 2020, 2:00pm-9:00pm.

     May: K-Bang!

    Where: Bayanihan Center, Pasig

To understand the inner workings of your KPop-loving kids, you must release them in their natural element: the fandom convention. Accompany them as they scour through stall-after-stall filled with themed merchandise such as stickers, shirts, posters, and fanart featuring their favorite band and “bias” member.

Are you already a KPop fan? Even better as you can share in the excitement together. The experience may just bridge the generation gap and open up a conversation regarding your own favorite groups from the past. (Perhaps you were one of the avid followers of Taiwanese boy band F4 back in the day?) Who knows? The children may succeed in completely converting you into a die-hard fan.

The K-Bang! market will be held on May 2, 2020, 10:00am-7:30pm. For inquiries regarding entrance fee rates, you may visit their page @kbangmnl.

    June: Toy Con PH

Where: SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia

One of the longest-running pop culture events in the country is best known for being a treasure trove of rare toy finds. In recent years, Toy Con has expanded to include toy designer panels, cosplay contests, and special meet-and-greet autograph sessions with international guests, to name a few. It’s an immersive and interactive way of sharing childhood memories with your kids as some of the merchandising booths even sell fast food meal toys from decades ago. Just remind the kids (and yourself) to choose wisely and avoid going overboard with the shopping.

The Philippine Toys, Hobbies, and Collectibles Convention will be held June 26-28, 2020. For inquiries regarding entrance fee rates, you may visit their page @toyconph.
