In the Philippines, Catholics and Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. It's a reminder of hope, new beginnings, and the promise of eternal life.

Easter is the most important feast for Christian believers. However, it doesn't always have to mean planning extravagant vacations or joining Easter egg hunts in malls. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments happen right at home—especially around the table.

So, how do we pass on this deep meaning to our children? Through fun, hands-on food activities that spark both creativity and conversation.

Marisol Ricacho, a Smart Parenting Village member and full-time mom of three boys, shares why their family keeps holiday traditions like Easter alive at home, "These occasions are opportunities to bring our family together. We also want them to look forward to occasions other than birthdays, Christmas, and New Year. We want our kids to remember the happy moments we shared when they were little through these simple but enjoyable activities. And most of all, it's to help them understand the reason behind the season."

In today's busy world, letting holidays become just another weekend is easy. But traditions—no matter how small—build a sense of rhythm and belonging for our children. They may not remember the activities themselves, but they will remember how they felt.

5 fun and faith-filled Easter food activities for kids

We've compiled a list of easy, fun food activities you can do with your kids to help you teach them concepts like resurrection and rebirth.

1. Create hand-painted Easter eggs.

A timeless tradition that never gets old, you only need two items for this activity that can help kids understand what Easter eggs are for.

What you need:
- Boiled eggs (cook for 10–12 minutes and let them cool)
- Acrylic paint and brushes

Wipe eggs with a damp cloth, then paint away! Kids can get creative while you talk about how the egg symbolizes new life. Plus, they get to enjoy their masterpiece as a merienda snack afterward.

Smart Parenting tip: Let kids use toothpicks or cotton buds for finer details. And don't forget to wear aprons!

2. Build these 'empty tomb' cookies.

This is a sweet and simple way to tell the Easter story, using donuts, cookies, and graham crackers. Inspired by mom blogger Rebecca and a popular TikTok video, these cookies visually represent the empty tomb, when Jesus rose from the dead.

How to make:
1. Crack a graham cracker in half for the base and cover it with white icing. Add green sprinkles or candy for "grass."
2. Build the tomb. Stand a mini donut on the graham cracker; you can also chop off part of it so it stands more steady on the biscuit. Then, place a mini cookie in front to represent the stone.
3. Add the message. Write "He is risen!" on a piece of paper and tape it to a toothpick. Stick it in as your final touch.

How to make:
Mix the Oreos and cream cheese, chill for 10 minutes, and roll into egg shapes. Dip in melted candy coating, add sprinkles, and chill again. That's it!

Make every Easter count

As parents, we often wonder: Are we doing enough? Are we making Easter meaningful for our kids? The answer doesn’t lie in big celebrations or picture-perfect crafts. It’s in the moments when your child asks, "Why do we paint eggs?"

Teaching children about Easter doesn't have to be rigid or complicated. Sometimes, painting an egg or decorating cookies is the perfect opportunity to share the story of Christ's resurrection in a way children can understand and enjoy. We only get a handful of Easter Sundays with our kids while they're young—let's make them meaningful, memorable, and full of love.

So whether you go all out or keep it low-key this year, know that you're already doing something beautiful.

While you're at it, make your own Family Age Chart that shows how much time we have with our little kids. Read how to do it here.
