Museo Pambata Reopens To The Public On December 6

Museo Pambata, the Philippines’ first children’s museum, is set to reopen its doors on December 6, welcoming families and visitors once again to explore its new exhibits and spaces.

A Glimpse of the Revitalized Museum

After a temporary closure in 2023, Museo Pambata is back just in time for its 30th anniversary, showcasing over 5,000 square meters of refreshed spaces. With bright, colorful walls, upgraded exhibits, and new curations focused on Filipino heritage, environmental awareness, and social responsibility, the museum continues to be the beloved destination that celebrates Filipino children and culture through play and learning.

Although not all exhibits will open simultaneously, the museum will debut several themed halls this December. Visitors can look forward to exploring Kalikasan (environment), Karagatan (under the sea), Pamayanan (history and community), Himig (music), and the arts and crafts center, Habi. Each space is designed to spark curiosity, encourage self-expression, and teach kids about the richness of Filipino culture and history.

Highlights of the New Exhibits

The Kalikasan exhibit brings the beauty of the natural world indoors, featuring huts, bamboo groves, and greenery that kids can interact with and pose next to.

In Karagatan, the focus shifts to the ocean and how human actions affect marine life. Children can see coral reefs, jellyfish, and other sea creatures made from recyclable materials, illustrating the importance of taking care of our waterways.

The Pamayanan exhibit will take kids through history and community life, showing how people have lived and worked together in different eras.

Meanwhile, Himig offers a delightful musical experience where kids can explore various instruments and learn about Filipino musical traditions. The Habi arts and crafts center invites children to unleash their creativity with hands-on activities that promote artistic expression.

What makes these exhibits even more special is that some were created by the kids who visited the museum themselves. Museo Pambata collaborates with schools from across the Philippines, encouraging students to submit artwork that’s featured in the museum’s displays. This unique partnership turns the museum into a space “by kids, for kids,” where young artists can see their work come to life.

Outdoor Fun and New Spaces

Museo Pambata isn’t just about indoor exhibits; it also offers a nature-inspired outdoor play area called Bahay Pukyutan. This playground is perfect for active play and lets children experience old-fashioned fun while surrounded by a design inspired by the late National Artist for Architecture, Francisco T. Mañosa.

At the center of this area stands the Bahay Kubo, surrounded by tile mosaics featuring crops and vegetables, and it’s available for event rentals.

One of the biggest additions for the museum’s 30th anniversary is Balay Yatu, a new building that will serve as a hub for children’s events, workshops, celebrations, and other creative activities.

Balay Yatu will host rotating art exhibits and performances, starting with Isla Pambata, which will showcase photographs and stories of children from different regions of the Philippines. The building will also house a cafe featuring a rotating lineup of regional food merchants, offering visitors a taste of local specialties.

Dulaang Pambata: A Theatrical Twist

One of the most exciting new features at Museo Pambata is Dulaang Pambata, a series of interactive performances created in partnership with student theater groups and professional troupes. Actors will guide guests through the museum while performing stories set in different areas of the exhibits. This unique approach combines theater with a guided tour, creating an unforgettable learning experience. The performances will change frequently, ensuring that every visit offers something new.

What to Expect Next from Museo Pambata?

Since its opening in 1994, Museo Pambata has been dedicated to championing Filipino children. With its revitalized exhibits and new additions, it aims to continue that mission for years to come.

"Our hope for Museo Pambata is to be an intergenerational cultural playground—where we now bring in the youth to champion forward what we all needed when we were younger, adults who listened to us as kids," says Museo Pambata President Bambi Mañosa-Tanjutco.

Future plans include new exhibits such as the Rights of a Child in the Karapatan Hall, an Arts & Crafts space designed by the late renowned artist Robert Alejandro, and a Classroom of the Future pop-up exhibit in partnership with Khan Academy and Samsung, designed by JJ Acuña. There is also an effort to turn the open area within the museum compound into a garden with more play spaces, providing a peaceful green space amid the busy Roxas Boulevard area.

How to Visit

Museo Pambata is located at Roxas Boulevard, corner South Drive, Manila City. Starting December 6, 2024, it will be open for walk-in guests on Fridays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is priced at PHP 450, with discounts available for senior citizens and PWDs. Kids under two years old can enter for free.
