Here’s some good news for history buffs and families who are looking for enriching activities this new year! The National Museum of the Philippines is now open to the public seven days a week, and admission is absolutely free.
In an announcement shared on the museum’s Facebook page, this initiative includes all Regional Component Museums across the country aside from those located in the NMP Central Complex. The free access and additional operating hours is in line with the museum’s mission to promote universal accessibility.
“Universal access has always been our priority. By opening our museums every day and maintaining free admission, we aim to make our programs and services even more accessible to everybody,” the post stated.
One new artwork guests should see is a clay sculpture by national hero Dr. Jose Rizal of his sleeping wife, Josephine Bracken, at the National Museum of Fine Arts. Named “Josephine Sleeping,” Rizal presumably made the sculpture while he was in exile in Dapitan City in Zamboanga del Norte between 1895 and 1896. This is the first time it’s put on public display as part of the commemoration of the hero’s 128th anniversary of his martyrdom.
Filipino Museums
The National Museum Complex in Manila houses three major museums:
- National Museum of Anthropology (opened in 1998): Visitors can learn more of the Filipino heritage and learn about indigenous traditions and artifacts.
- National Museum of Fine Arts (opened in 2000): Guests get the opportunity to marvel at the masterpieces of renowned Filipino artists, including Juan Luna and Fernando Amorsolo.
- National Museum of Natural History (opened in 2018): Visitors can learn more about the Philippines’ diverse ecosystems and natural wonders.
Outside of Metro Manila, regional and area museums provide opportunities for cultural exploration in areas such as Agusan del Norte, Cebu, Ifugao, Ilocos Sur, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Batanes, Alba, Bohol, Cagayan, Negros Oriental, Marinduque, and Sulu. Site museums in Benguet, Rizal, and Palawan offer unique insights into local history and archaeology.
Operating hours for all National Museum branches are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, from Monday to Sunday.
