10-Minute Snack Ideas for Family Movie Night

Ditch the junk food for these healthy (and kid-approved!) snacks.

Watching a movie at home with the kids is a treat, but it doesn't feel complete without snacks. But instead of the usual chips and dips, we opted for these healthier snacks and asked four kids to try. Here's what they had to say:

Tuna Pesto Dip

This tasty dip combines two healthy foods—tuna, which contains good cholesterol, and basil, which is packed with vitamins and minerals. 

You can serve this dip with a side of vegetable sticks or low-calorie crackers. You can even use it as a pasta sauce!

½ cup basil leaves, washed

2 garlic cloves

¼ cup cashew nuts

1 cup olive oil

1 185-gram can Gold Seas Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil with Chili, drained

1 185-gram can Gold Seas Tuna Chunks in Herb and Garlic, drained

¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

Salt and pepper

Salted crackers

Combine basil leaves, garlic, cashew nuts, and olive oil in a blender. Process until smooth. Transfer to a bowl.

In a separate bowl, mix Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil with Chili and Tuna Chunks in Herb and Garlic until chunks turn into smaller flakes.

Add Parmesan cheese and tuna to the bowl of pesto mixture. Mix until well combined.

Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with salted crackers.

Tuna and Mango Soft Tacos

This Mexican-inspired snack covers all the major food groups. You get protein from the chunky tuna, Vitamin C from the mangoes, and your serving of veggies from the fresh toppings. 

1 tablespoon olive oil

3 cloves garlic, chopped

1 185g can Gold Seas Tuna Chunks in Lemon & Pepper, drained

1 185g can Gold Seas Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil with Chili, drained

Salt and pepper

6 mini whole wheat tortillas, warmed

1 cup lettuce

2 mangoes, cubed

¼ cup cilantro, washed

Lemon slices, to serve

For the honey and balsamic vinegar dressing:

¼ cup balsamic vinegar

2 tablespoons honey

1 tablespoon olive oil

Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Saute garlic until fragrant.

Add Tuna Chunks in Lemon & Pepper and Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Olive Oil with Chili. Mix until heated through. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

3 Make the dressing: Mix balsamic vinegar, honey, and olive oil until it has a slightly thick consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

4 To assemble the tacos, place lettuce in the center of a tortilla. Add one portion of the tuna mixture. Top with mangoes and cilantro.

Drizzle the tacos with honey and balsamic vinegar dressing. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve with lemon slices.

Curried Tuna Pita Pockets

Potassium, vitamins A, and B are just some of the nutrients you'll find in a can of tuna. It's also loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, the good kind of fat that can help reduce the risk of heart disease. 

1 185g can Gold Seas Tuna Chunks in Mild Indian Curry, drained

1 185g can Gold Seas Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Springwater, drained

Salt and pepper

3 pita pockets, sliced in half and warmed

1 cup lettuce

½ cup cherry tomatoes, sliced in half

½ cup Greek yogurt

In a large bowl, lightly mix Tuna Chunks in Mild Indian Curry and Yellowfin Tuna Chunks in Springwater. Season with salt and pepper.

Fill half a pita pocket with lettuce, and then add the tuna mixture and cherry tomatoes. 

Drizzle the pita pocket with Greek yogurt. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
