It’s easy to overlook, but fruits are also an essential part of your child’s lunch baon, not just the rice and ulam. To make it easier for you, here are some tips to easily and creatively pack your kids a serving of delicious and nutritious fruit.
Make it easy to eat
Fruits like rambutan, lanzones or atis might not be the ideal fruits to include in your child’s lunchbox as they are too cumbersome to peel and eat. Children don’t usually have the patience for it and they’d rather spend their break playing tag than peeling fruits. Keep it fresh
No one likes soggy and soft fruits, which is what happens when they’re not packed properly. This might be what’s keeping your child from eating the sliced apples you’ve been preparing for him. Apples not only go soft when they’re sliced but they also oxidize and turn into an unsightly brown color. To prevent this, either drizzle your apple slices with a bit of calamansi juice or slice the fruit, assemble it into a whole again, then cover with plastic film wrap.

Keep it cool
Fruits like melons, watermelons, pineapples and lychees are best served cold. They’re more refreshing this way. If you’re including any of these fruits in your child’s lunchbox, pack the container where you’ve placed the fruits next to his cold water jug or juice box. Don’t freeze them in the hopes they’ll stay frozen until lunch time, as this will only make them mushy once they thaw.
A portion of his daily serving of fruit can come from his school tumbler too. Replace his powdered iced tea or powdered orange juice drink with 100% premium apple juice, pineapple juice or four seasons drinks. Got oranges in the house? Pack him one and squeeze him some fresh OJ too while you’re at it!

Serve it for recess
If your child is a slow eater or would rather skip his fruity dessert to go play on the school grounds, you can still make sure he gets his serving of fruits by putting it into his recess snack instead. A scrumptious peanut butter and banana sandwich is always a winner. Make his usual peanut butter sandwich but evenly distribute one whole sliced banana on top of the spread. He’ll get protein from the peanut butter, carbohydrates from the bread and the goodness of fruits from the banana!
