For some countries, summer means frolicking in the park, wearing light sweaters and sipping on smoothies. However, for a tropical one like ours, the intense heat and humidity are enough to make it impossible to sit comfortably, let alone go about our daily routines with ease.
This is no problem for homes with air-conditioning, but for those without, it can pose quite a challenge. To help you keep your home cool without having to spend a ton of money in one go, here are a few ideas you can try:
1. Stick sheets in the fridge for half an hour before bed.
Before hitting the sack, try placing cotton sheets in a Ziploc (to keep odors from getting to your bedding), let it chill for around 30 minutes and use it as usual. This won't keep you cool all night, but it will provide relief from the sweltering heat until you fall asleep.
2. Hang up wet towels. If you need a quick way to cool down a room, try hanging a wet towel or sheet in front of an open window. The dampness will filter the hot air blowing into your home and bring down the temperature even by a little bit.
Need to cool down, stat? Apply ice packs or a single ice cube on your pulse points where heat builds up. These points include the wrists, neck, elbows, ankles and behind the knees.
4. Try a DIY air conditioner. Remember when you were a kid and your mom would place blocks of ice in front of a fan? Believe it or not, this classic trick still works! How? The breeze picks up the cold from the ice surface as it melts, creating a cool mist.

Tip: To keep things from getting messy, try a bigger container like a roasting pan or using smaller blocks of ice so you can replace it easily.
During the summer, hot air rises and so it can be uncomfortable to stay in lofted beds or traditional mattresses. Try moving your cot to the floor or as close as you can get the ground to beat the heat and sleep soundly.
