When it comes to decorating the room of our kids, we need to make sure it’s safe, comfortable, and spacious. The owner, who is also a decorator, was in charge of designing the space for her kids, turning it into a whimsical bedroom that takes inspiration from ships.

Here are easy decorating nautical-inspired ideas for your child's bedroom

Start with the soft furnishings

Changing your curtains, bed sheets, pillow covers, or rugs will already feel like a makeover (minus the noisy and  expensive carpentry). To go with the ocean theme, the owner opted for navy blue sheets with shark prints, her son’s favorite animal. If you have a similar the theme, you can settle for sheets and pillowcases with sailboats, waves, and even pirate-related designs for a playful touch.

Paint the walls

You don’t always have to settle for solid-colored walls! Make it fun by painting horizontal stripes that make the room look and feel bigger than it really is. Alternating different shades of blue (as seen on the photo) adds depth to the room!

Bonus idea: Aside from choosing colors that match the theme you have in mind, you can also consider painting a mural to complete the look. The space on top, which resembles an upper deck of a ship, also has extra mattresses to accommodate guests when needed. 

Prioritize safety

Ensure the safety of the young ones by childproofing the space. Go for non-slip area rugs, add corner guards to avoid bumps and bruises, and install handrails when needed. Since the bed has an upper deck, the owner installed handrails on the wall to make it easier for kids to go up the short flight of steps.

Ask your neighborhood carpenter to craft a shelf

A boat-inspired shelf? It’s possible! It’s more appealing compared to the modular ones we often see and gives you extra cabinet space as well. Use the upper part as display area for toys and photos, while the cabinets can be utilized when storing shoes and other belongings.

Set up a study area
