NBI Clearance For A Prospective Yaya? Here's How She Can Get One
ILLUSTRATOR Cyrille Calderon
  • Raising kids and a family and managing a home are two of the hardest jobs in the world, especially in today’s hurried life. In itself, being a mom means we already have a lot on our plate and we need all the help we can get.

But on top of our tasks as homemakers, most of us also earn a living by working outside of the home. Thus it is absolutely necessary to have someone reliable to look after our children when we are away. And since most everyone is faced with the same situation, there seems to be a shortage of yayas and helpers these days. Our tendency then is to take in the first person applying for the job — and of course that can only spell disaster (memories of abusive yayas come to mind).

When hiring help, we should take all the precautions we can to ensure the person is not of questionable character: we get referrals from friends if possible, ask for character references, and do a thorough interview. And to make sure she has no criminal records, we can require the applicant to get an NBI clearance

    What is an NBI clearance?

The NBI is an agency under the Department of Justice of the Philippine government. An NBI clearance is a document issued by the National Bureau of Investigation that certifies an individual has no criminal record.

If you have an applicant that needs help getting or renewing her NBI Clearance, you could direct her to this page for an easy, step-by-step guide.

How to get an NBI Clearance if you’re a first-timer

If it’s your first time to apply for an NBI clearance, you’ll need a computer or a smartphone that has an internet connection. Using the browser, go to www.nbi-clearance.com and register by filling out the form with your information (gender, civil status, birth date, first, middle, and last name, etc.) Don’t forget to tick “Read and Accept Terms of Service” before clicking “Sign Up.”

This will then take you to the Application Form. Fill it up correctly and press Save Information. You can also edit the information you supplied if you happen to make a mistake inputting it.

The next step is to schedule an appointment. Click “Apply for Clearance” and select the NBI branch where you plan to go, a date, and either an “AM” or “PM” schedule. Be sure to check the calendar and research holiday schedules to avoid problems with your appointment.

Lastly, select a payment option. You can pay at the bank, through online banking, Bayad Centers, MultiPay, ECPay, or through 7-11 branches. A Multi-Purpose NBI Clearance will cost Php130.00. However, if you use the e-payment service, an additional Php25 service fee.

Click the “Proceed Payment” button and it will generate a Payment Reference Number which you will need when you make the actual payment. After you’ve paid using your preferred method, log into your account again on www.nbi-clearance.com and see if it shows a record of your payment. How to use the NBI clearance Quick Renewal feature

Getting your NBI clearance renewed is now a lot easier because you can do it online (unlike in the old days). This applies to those who already have an existing document issued by the agency, but which is expired, thus the need for a new one. An NBI clearance is valid for one year.

However, the Quick Renewal feature can only be used by those who have already been previously issued an NBI Clearance (between 2014 to present), and who have their NBI Clearance ID Numbers on hand. (If it’s your first time applying for an NBI Clearance, you’ll need to do the steps mentioned above instead.)

To use this new feature, go to https://clearance.nbi.gov.ph. Click the “NBI Clearance Quick Renewal” button. A new window will ask for your NBI ID Number. On your existing NBI Clearance, you will find it on the upper left hand portion of the document. Input it and click Verify. It should then show you your personal information found in their database. It will also require you to select the purpose of your renewal.

Continue filling up the other pertinent details. Click “Next.” Select the method of payment. An additional minimum fee will be charged if you use the Bayad Center or MultiPay / ECPay, and the amount you need to pay will adjust according to your location, whether you’re within or outside Metro Manila, but it is definitely more costly than if you get it using the regular process.

Press the Proceed button and to get your NBI Clearance Reference Number. Pay the amount and you’re done! You only need to wait for the document to arrive at your doorstep.
