No matter how big or small our homes are, we all have that corner in the house that has become like our mini junkyard. It's where you can find the television set with the DVD player; the sofa set you meant to sell; and the barely used nesting side tables that you wanted as breastfeeding station but never got to do it. Now they're all gathering dust because you are still hoping they’ll be useful somehow, someday.
Well, you can put your old stuff to good use, declutter your home, AND help build homes for families in need by giving them to ReStore, a home improvement charity store managed by Habitat for Humanity Philippines.
Items that can be donated include (they should be gently used or in good working condition):
ReStore can pick up donated goods for free as long as it's in bulk and they are big-ticket items.
If you don't have anything to donate, but you're looking to remodel or renovate, you can shop for all of the above at ReStore at lower or marked down prices. And ReStore doesn't just receive pre-loved items from individuals. They get new items from corporations.
Just recently, Jenny Rodil, who is in charge of corporate partnerships at ReStore and whom we spoke over the phone, tells us that home improvement giant Wilcon delivered nine truckloads of new floor and wall tiles, and Dura Last donated 614 pails of paint recently. Cafes and restaurants have also been known to donate so don't be surprised if you spot a familiar chair.
The money ReStore receives from your shopping purchases goes to support the mission of Habitat. So you see ReStore's concept is similar to retail, but it's purely a donation center, according to Francis Macatulad, head of ReStore for Habitat Philippines.
"It is a place where people can donate. Donations can be in the form of items, voluntarily given or in cash in exchange for an item that a person acquires from the store," Francis explains,
While it now has about 1,000 outlets all over the globe, ReStore in the Philippines is a first in Asia and the pilot store for developing countries.
So whether you shop, donate, or volunteer (yes, you can work at the store as an individual or as a group), you help Habitat’s mission to build decent and affordable homes, communities, and hope.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore is located along Alabang-Zapote Road in Barangay Almanza Uno, Las Piñas City (in between Shell gas station and DBP Village, beside Amaia). Store hours are from Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00am to 7:00pm.
