Kindness is what you do when no one is watching. It’s when a person’s real character shows.
A fifth-grader in Folsom, California, has gained viral fame after a video of him playing the piano for his fellow students during recess was shared to Facebook on October 17. It happened back in 2017, but still a story worth sharing.
A couple of times a week, Nathan Zhang, a fifth-grader at Theodore Judah Elementary, in Folsom, California, spends his recess playing the piano to first graders. He said adding music to their young kids’ day “would be great for them,” and “it’s really enjoyable.”

“I realized I really enjoyed playing for them,” the 10-year-old piano prodigy, who has previously performed at New York City’s esteemed Carnegie Hall, told WTKR News 3. He added that a lot of the kids like to listen to Chopin because it’s lyrical, easier to understand, and somewhat romantic!
School Principal Canen Peterson shared that Nathan wanting to play for others and give back is amazing.
“I think good character is when somebody isn’t watching. This has been happening for a while, it’s neat that our student’s good character is being shown,” he added.
Nathan sharing his talent and spreading good vibes through music is just what you need to start your day right.
