  • There's nothing more admirable than a person who stands on his two feet; more do when he only has one. It's an inspiration not only to typically-abled individuals but most especially to other persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Joy Calimlim Habana, 49, has only one leg. He was initially born with two legs, but doctors found a medical issue in his right leg. Doctors told his parents it might have been caused by pills accidentally taken during pregnancy.

Because of the condition, which he didn't disclose, his parents decided to let the doctors amputate his right leg. Joy says that it was a mistake since it could be operated on, but he doesn't dweel on what-ifs.

Now a dad to four kids, Joy doesn't let his disability get in the way of providing for his family. He made do with the cards he was dealt with. He juggles two jobs during the pandemic as a delivery app rider and a part-time pest control worker.

"Gusto kong ipakita sa lahat na putol man ako, marmi para rin akong magagawa na hindi nagagawa ng iba," Joy said.

Can you imagine him riding his bike, with his right leg supported by a crutch, and delivering your food and goods? Former Senator JV Ejercito saw Joy on the road. He lauded him for his hard work despite having a disability.

Aside from working two jobs, Joy also sails. He's a skipper, similar to a captain, and could command a sailboat on his own if none of his friends could join him.

He is currently waiting for word from the Philippine Sports Commission to formally join the national sailing team after being invited by fellow persons with disability (PWD) sailors.

Instead of being ashamed of being one-legged, this dad of four embraced his disability and made the most out of it. Learn more about his story below.
