The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on parents, students, and teachers. But perhaps it is tougher for children who need special education (SPED), as physical interaction with teachers is crucial for SPED learners.
In preparation for the time when face-to-face classes can finally resume, Cyrell Jones Sidlao, a special education teacher from Buyos Elementary School in Sindangan, Zamboanga Del Norte, decided to use his own money to transform a storage room into a classroom for his students.
The school assigned an old storage room since he only has four learners each in the mornings and afternoons. But because Cyrell wanted the space to be conducive to learning, he decided to take money out of his own pocket to renovate the classroom.
He painted the whole room white and added accents on the walls so his students won’t easily get distracted. He spent around Php20,000 for the makeover.
“If you really love your children and you really love your work, that will inspire you to do something [for them],” the teacher shares in an interview with Summit Original Videos.
“Kahit sarili kong bulsa ‘yung ginamit ko, ok na ok para maging masaya ang mga bata at magiging kumportable sila sa classroom ko,” Cyrell adds.
With the renovation, Cyrell hopes to inspire more parents to entrust their children with disabilities or learning difficulties to their teachers.
“Accept it, don’t be afraid to let them mingle with the society. Andito po kami as SPED teachers na nag-ca-cater po sa kanila,” he says. “Kaya naming ito para sa inyo. Laban lang.”
