'I Am Beautiful': 3-Year-Old Amputee Gets A New Prosthetic Leg

Three-year-old Maria Shaaban was very excited to receive a new prosthetic leg at a treatment center in Aleppo province in Syria, video posted on March 15 shows.

The video shows physical therapist Ghazal Hilal replacing Maria’s prosthesis. She requires a new one every six months as she grows, Hilal told Storyful.

Maria lost her leg in an airstrike in Raqqa province when she was 1 year old, Hilal told a local activist group. The airstrike killed her entire family, according to Hilal.

“Are you happy? … This is beautiful limb for beautiful Maria,” Ghazal says to Maria in the video. In reply, “I am beautiful Maria,” Maria says with excitement.

Hilal works in the Happy Steps center, in the Bab al-Salameh refugee camp. The camp is in the Azaz area of northern Aleppo province.
