  • Ariel Rivera surprised his wife Gelli de Belen by recently posting, on his Instagram account, an old photo of them in a romantic pose, and writing in the caption, "Really missing this one..."

Gelli reciprocated her husband's public display of affection by writing in the comments section, "Honeyyyy, missing you too."

That's when a fan of Gelli's chimed in to say she's been folowing the actress's showbiz career since Gelli was in a love team with Raymart Santiago. Gelli and Raymart were likewise an item off-screen.

The fan then realized she's commenting on Ariel's post, so she apologized, writing, ARIEL-GELLI NA SIEMPRE FOREVER."

(Ariel, a balladeer known as "Kilabot ng mga Colegiala" in the 1990s, and Gelli starred in the 1997 romantic flick, Ikaw Pala Ang Mahal Ko. They got married later that year.)

Ariel assured the fan that he's cool with the comments. He wrote, "No worries. I'm not the jealous type."

Why Ariel and Gelli's marriage works

In an episode in Gelli's vlog, the couple answered some questions that shed light on why their 25-year marriage works.

For starters, Ariel refuted, to him, the public's biggest misconception that they are different from each other. The truth is, he said, "We’re so alike."

He turned to his wife, "Yes, we’re very much alike. Our goals, our values are the same. You’re just louder. You talk more. You’re louder. But that’s it...’Yung pagkatao natin, parehong-pareho."

For her part, Gelli thinks the biggest misconception about them is, turning to Ariel, "Under ka." To which Ariel quipped, "Hindi ba?"

Gelli went on explaining, "Akala n’yo ba? Akala ba nila na si Ariel, under? Or si Ariel e tahimik at ako ang nasusunod sa bahay? Oh, you’re so mistaken."

She turned to her husband: "Our goals, our opinions may not be 100 percent the same, but they are aligned. So there’s not much difference in decisions."

Ariel agreed, saying, "It’s not hard to get together and agree on something. Our core values are similar."

On the question why they click, Ariel replied with "Communication." He said, "We talk."

    Gelli added,"We don’t just talk."

Nodding, Ariel elaborated, "We communicate. We genuinely enjoy each other’s company."

Gelli then issued a warning: "Don’t think he’s serious. He’s actually more makulit than I am."

Ariel concurred: "The people who work with me know that…My being makulit is my form of lambing. It means I’m comfortable with you, I enjoy being with you."

For the next question, Ariel answered when he realized Gelli was the person he’d like to spend the rest of my life with. He said, "I learned early on in our relationship, siguro on our first six months."

He looked back at those times around 1992: "Yeah, I knew. I was already mature enough, I was 25, 26. Alam ko rin na maalaga ka. We had the same goals, values in life…We love the same things.

"You’re thoughtful, more thoughtful than the others. I had two serious relations prior. So I knew early on."

Gelli admitted not having the same thoughts in the early stage of their relationship. She said, "Hindi ako ganyan ka-advance mag-isip. I was 19 at that time, or 20. Six months into our relationship, hindi ko inisip ’yan. Basta mahal ko s’ya, gusto ko s’ya, that’s it.

"Eventually it crossed my mind, of course. It was way, way after what we’ve been through."

After five years of dating, Ariel and Gelli got married on December 22, 1997 at the Sanctuario de San Jose in Greenhills, San Juan. They have two sons: Joaquin, 23, and Julio, 21, who are both based in Canada.
