  • Relationship experts always say that trust is an essential component on which a lasting union is founded. And for one to be trusted, he or she needs to establish trustworthiness, which you earn from being honest.

So we all want honesty, we all want the truth. But what if the truth is not so pleasant — will we still want to hear it, especially if it involves the past of our husband or wife?

It is the question celebrity couple Richard Poon and Maricar Reyes tackled on their "Relationship Matters" video blog (vlog) recently.

The couple's Youtube followers had mixed feelings about the issue: while some wanted absolute truth, there were those who believe that what they don't know won't hurt them.

Richard likened the situation to buying an old car. "Pag bumili ka ng kotse...Ganda, ganda, ganda. [After] one year, nag-breakdown siya, may sira pala yung kotse. Nung binili ko meron na pero hindi sinabi sa akin. Usually sumasama yung loob ko — sana sinabi mo nung start pa lang. Same thing with the relationship," he explained.

Facing the camera, and with her husband of five years beside her, Maricar confessed, "Noong hindi pa kami dating ni Richard, I made some mistakes of my own sa past.

"Nagdadalawang isip ako kung sasabihin ko sa kanya o hindi. Noong una, hindi ko sinasabi. But eventually there was one evening, tinawagan ko siya ulit. Naisip ko, 'Okay, bahala na.'

"Pa-cute pa ako, kasi nakakatakot, e. It's very difficult to tell bad things about yourself to your partner. Siyempre, gusto mo mag-pa-impress, 'di ba?

"Eventually, tumawag ako sa kanya, and I told him lahat ng baho ko na nakakahiya. Kung ayaw na niya ako after telling him all the things that I wanted to tell him, e 'di huwag. E 'di tapos na. At least, before anything got more complicated, nasabi ko na."

In an interview with TV personality Korina Sanchez following their wedding in 2013, Richard said that he had to restrain himself from wooing Maricar for about a year after they first met because he wanted to be sure about her first.

On the other hand, Maricar said in the same interview that she feels valued the way Richard treats her. "Importante that I’m worth a lot. Kasi it’s a nice feeling. It’s something na dapat ma-grasp ng lahat ng babae. 'Yun dapat ang hanapin nila in someone that they want to end up with."

Five years later, Maricar knows the same to be true. In one part of their recent vlog, she said, "Sometimes, when you're younger, you're more emotional, more idealistic. Pag nakarinig ka ng mali, akala mo end of the world na, e. Pero ngayon, having gone through some stuff, ako, I've realized the value of truth.

Walang kondisyon — good or bad, I love you."
