Heart Evangelista, Chiz Escudero Renew Wedding Vows, 'I Sold My Soul; You Bought It Back For Me'

Heart Evangelista and Chiz Escudero renewed their wedding vows in an intimate ceremony at the Balesin Island on February 15, 2024.

The couple, who tied the knot in the same venue in 2015, delivered their heartfelt vows to each other, and one of the guests, Dr. Aivee Teo, was able to capture the moment.

On her part, Heart told her husband of nine years, "I sold my soul, and you bought it back for me," quoting the song You Needed Me by Anne Murray. She continued, "You have softened all the edges, you've rearranged the stars and you have pulled them down to where I am. You have proven every word of my favorite love song can become a reality. And just like I said before, I will love you and I will always love you with all my heart."

Chiz then reassured Heart, "I promise to protect you from everything that is bad in this world. Even from yourself, from myself sometimes. I promise to stand beside you and by your side even from the sidelines, watching and clapping as you grow, excel, and be who you are meant to be. And I promise to love you as I grow much much much old...er. I love you, and I always will."

Heart Evangelista, Chiz Escudero's renewal of vows 

“Renewal of vows” is a ceremony that allows couples reconfirm their wedding vows originally exchanged in a Catholic church.

When to hold renewal of vows?

It's the couple's discretion when they want to renew their vows. It could be during a milestone anniversary, like 5th, 10th, 15th, or 20th, but there's no rule.

In an interview with Harper's Bazaar Singapore, the 39-year-old style icon revealed that they initially planned to hold their renewal of vows on their fifth wedding anniversary, but life got in the way.

"But all things happen for a reason; we’re here in our ninth year of marriage and it just feels like the perfect time to do it. We’ve grown so much as a couple and are in a great place together," said Heart.

She added, the total wedding planning took about nine months, and it was Chiz who led it. "I’m very lucky," she said.

Who do you need to invite?

A renewal of vows is usually an intimate ceremony with just your family and closest friends. For Heart and Chiz, they personally handpicked their guests who are a little over 50 people. Heart gave a tip: "It wasn’t hard to decide who we wanted to invite—these are people who have played important roles in our marriage."

Among the most important guests in Heart and Chiz's renewal of vows was Cecile Ongpauco, the bride's mom. Heart told Harper's Bazaar, "My mum is also here. She wasn’t at the 2015 ceremony but all is well now and I’m happy that she’s finally here. I told her, “You finally made it mum, but you’re nine years late!” But we’re all good."

Heart's dad, Reynaldo Ongpauco, was not able to attend.

Do you need to change wedding rings?

Some couples opt to keep their old wedding rings, while some get a new pair. A day before their renewal of vows, Chiz gave Heart a diamond ring on her 39th birthday.

How much would a vow renewal cost and what are the requirements?

Some churches offer packages for vow renewal, so it's best to check with your preferred church. However, you may also opt to do it in the venue of your choice. Since it doesn't have any legal obligation, you don't need a priest to officiate your wedding. 

Manila Cathedral requires the Church Marriage Certificate to be submitted if a couple decides to renew their vows in their church.

Why should you renew your vows?

The answer depends on every couple, but for Heart, she shared that although the ceremony is an intimate one, it's very special to her. "Because I thought I knew what love was, but now, I know what love should be. I feel like I’m getting married for the first time again. So it’s very very special, especially for a lot of untold stories," she explained.

For Chiz's part, he said in an interview with Karen Davila that their renewal of vows marks an important milestone for them.

"Only because we have a lot of things to celebrate which I guess we would be able to say or announce in the next couple of months... There's a lot to celebrate in life right now in our family, in our marriage, between us, with her," Chiz explained.
