*Mommy J delayed giving up her job as a business development manager for a big manufacturing company for several years even though she had made a deal with her husband. She agreed with *Daddy J to focus on the family right after marriage.
When she got married in February 2017, Mommy J, a self-confessed workaholic, asked her husband if they could wait for at least two more years before having a baby so she could stay at her job longer and try out other opportunities in the corporate world.

In April of 2018, the couple was happily surprised to find out they were expecting after going through two threatened miscarriages (Mommy J also suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS). “When I saw a pea-sized being in my ultrasound, it helped me to slowly embrace the idea of giving up what I’ve worked hard to be with that tiny one.”
Six months before giving birth to Baby J, she mustered the courage to finally resign, wanting to spend more time with family. Daddy J, she also pointed out, saw a “bigger potential in me that I never saw because I was stubborn.”
The potential her husband saw was the jewelry business that Mommy J put up. Daddy J, who worked as an associate director for a financial investment group in Southeast Asia, gave Mommy J all the financial advice he knew for her business to grow and thrive.ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW
“She started selling jewelry to her officemates when she was my age and said she made more money than when she was working and resigned years later. Her story inspired me,” she narrates.
Mommy J had to face several challenges when she decided to go full time. “I was a one-man team. I respond to all client inquiries, did the marketing, logistics coordination, financial monitoring,” she says and adds, “I realized, no job is easy. What’s more important is that you enjoy it.”

Today, Mommy J’s online business has been attracting steady clients. “When it occurred to me that I can afford to give up the lifestyle and ambition that I wanted as long as I’m always available for my baby, I knew I did the right thing,” she says. “I’m blessed to have an option. Have a foundation in sales.
“Since I was in sales, it gave me an idea of how to handle all sorts of customers, coordinate your logistics, deal with production, and learn new trends in marketing.”
Use profits to grow business first.
“What I used for my packaging, promotion, logistics are profits from my first sales. Also, before I release the items to my clients, they settle their balance first, then I pay my platero.”
Never stop learning.
“I did my own research about jewelry and visited my plateros to understand how the business goes. When I had enough money, I flew myself abroad to scout for more suppliers of raw materials such as diamonds and gemstones. Build the business in trust.
“My first clients were just mostly friends, relatives, and officemates--people who trusted me. Then other people learned about me through word of mouth. The key is to build a relationship with your clients. Treat them as a family and be patient with their demands. They pay me their hard their hard-earned money, so I try my best to give them back their money’s worth.”
