Mom Opens First ‘Ulam Drive-Thru’ In PH! ‘Madali Siyang I-Setup At I-Replicate’

  • The COVID-19 pandemic affected a number of businesses, including small-medium enterprises. Ricca Del Rosario, an online seller and mom of three, had to pivot quickly since her earnings suffered because of the lockdowns.

    She and her husband, Lionel, decided to venture into the food industry. They opened Jaco’s Ulam (named after their only son) in Malolos, Bulacan, in December 2020. It's the first “ulam drive-thru” in the Philippines!

    “Isang gabi — wala pang pandemic that time — pauwi kami, gusto namin ng masarap na pagkain. Tapos puro na lang fast food ang nadadaanan naming drive-thru,” Ricca shares in an interview with Summit Video Originals.

    “Out of the blue, naisip lang namin, ‘ano kaya ano, merong drive-thru ng lutong ulam, like carinderia-type, ng mga paborito naming Filipino dish?'”

    The pandemic gave them the opportunity to make their business idea a reality. After all, it addressed an important need — “Lahat ng tao nag-da-drive thru ngayon dahil takot sila sa labas,” Ricca says.

    The mom admits that they cannot lower their prices to typical carinderia fare, since they use a lot of packaging materials for their drive-thru. But they strived to make it affordable — their meals range between Php90 to Php250. Surprisingly, people really loved their food and most of the ulam are almost always sold out!

    Their bestsellers include Dinuguan, Bistek, Kalderetang Baka, Kare-Kare, Adobong Isaw, and Pork Sisig. They also have Filipino-inspired milk tea. “Ang mabili sa’min ay ‘yung mga pagkain na hindi rin madaling lutuin sa bahay,” Ricca shares.

    Ricca says they took a leap of faith with Jaco’s, but it was a really nice fallback since their businesses were put on hold during the community quarantine. Lionel, who owns a construction company, also had to put a stop on some projects because of the pandemic.


    “Na-realize namin, ‘yung businesses namin, hindi siya pandemic-proof, pwede siyang mawala any time. Pero kapag food, talagang hindi siya mawawala kahit anong mangyari,” Ricca says.

    With their profitable venture, Ricca is now looking to turn Jaco’s into a franchise since a lot of people are also inquiring about it. “Kasi parang ang dali-dali niyang i-setup. Ang dali niyang i-replicate.

    “Sabi nila, kapag successful ‘yung business mo, mas maganda kung ma-i-multiply mo ‘yung success, para sa ibang gustong maging successful rin,” she says.
