Andi Eigenmann: 'This Is What Postpartum Depression Looks Like to Me'

The mom of two hopes the sun, sand, and sea in Siargao will help her overcome PPD

Just a few weeks after Andi Eigenmann gave birth to daughter Keliana Alohi, or Lilo, on July 23, 2019, she and her family are back in the place they call paradise: Siargao in the province of Surigao del Norte, Mindanao.

Together with her partner Philmar Alipayo and her 7-year-old daughter Ellie, Andi’s little family of four flew to the island on August 16 and are settling nicely back into their home. But besides the comfort of the familiar, Andi has another reason she wanted to go back to Siargao as soon as possible: to help her cope better with postpartum depression (PPD).

“Sunny days are coming!” the 29-year-old mom of two posted on Instagram on August 15, along with a throwback photo of herself when she was 16 weeks pregnant with Lilo. The statement is both literal and figurative for Andi, who has been looking forward to living the island life once again in the hopes that it will alleviate the symptoms of postpartum depression.

On August 6, she posted a photo of herself and baby Lilo, revealing she has PPD. Part of the caption reads, “I guess this is what post partum depression looks like to me,” which includes not feeling like herself, sleepless nights, having feelings of uncertainty and guilt, among others.

“I feel going back to our island home is what’s going to be most impactful. ‘Sunny days are coming!’ is what I have been telling myself whenever I feel ‘confused’ about where I’m at in life. I’m still sure of it. And I don’t just mean actual sunlight, but brighter days in general,” she wrote in her more recent post.

“I do miss my old self. Myself, before having 2 kids. But not enough to regret the life I have now. I love where I’m at, even if it hasn’t been easy. That’s what keeps me going,” Andi added.

Such feelings are quite normal among women who have just given birth, and being in an environment where the new mom feels at peace will certainly help  improve her outlook. Ever the fighter, Andi hopes — Andi KNOWS — this is all temporary, and that in time all of these will go away.

Based on recent posts of their life on the island, it looks like Andi is getting there.

“Regardless of how long this PPD lasts or how it goes away, having @chepoxz [Philmar] and my 2 girls by my side keeps me from giving up on my dreams. And this is why I’m sure that sunny days are coming,” Andi concludes.
